Zuryah and Jose

How We Met

We met each other while working together. A mutual friend introduced us, our first date lasted all day, and the rest is history.

how they asked

10/04/15. My girlfriend Zuryah and I had been dating nearly four years. I knew I wanted to pop the big question during our favorite month of October. I had acquired the ring during the summer but living in Phoenix, Arizona I waited for cooler weather as well. I enlisted the help of family and friends to assist with the secret proposal. I had Zuryah’s older sister play a big part. Her sister took art classes while in college. So I thought that an “art show” would be believable. I told her older sister to invite Zuryah to a friend’s upcoming art show. My girlfriend agreed to attend. Little did Zuryah know the Art showcase would be a surprise engagement at the Desert Botanical Gardens surrounded by our friends and family. I reserved a small area towards the top of DBG with the city of Phoenix and scenic desert sunset as a backdrop. I made a fake brochure advising that the artist was unveiling his newest masterpiece and in order to get the full effect he asked for every guest to blindfold their invitee. They arrive. The employee at DBG hands them the brochure and blindfold. Zuryah’s sister blindfolds her and walks her way up to the ‘art show,” Once they reach the top of the mountain. Her sister removes her blindfold. And I appear. (I told her I picked up a shift so she thought I was at work because I left earlier in the morning but really i was putting the finishing touches on things. Making sure everything would run smooth.) Once the blindfold come off.. I read a few sentences to express my love. ” I love you more than words could ever express. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I just have one question…” Then as I drop down to one knee (accompanied by John Legend-All of me as background music) our family and friends flip their signs they were holding, towards my girlfriend. It reads Zuryah Byrd Lawson…Will you Marry Me??? She says YES! and it was a moment I will never forget. Videos and photos were taken that day as well to capture that beautiful moment. My best friend became my fiancee that day.
