How We Met
We met at college at San Diego State University. We were both studying to be Civil Engineers. We met in the fall semester but probably said a few sentences to each other since we only had one class together. We made awkward eye contact and smiles and that was it. The following semester (spring), we had every single class together! The weirdest thing ever. So the first week of the spring semester for our last class, we had a lab together. At the end of the lab, I turned around and asked him for his number since I noticed that we had the same schedule and I remember him from last semester. From there we became friends! By the time spring break rolled around we were texting nonstop. He asked me after spring break on a date to the padres game. Each time he asked me on a date he would bring me flowers, such a romantic. After a couple of dates, he asked me to be his girlfriend and well the rest is history! I love him so much.
How They Asked
So the summer of 2021 it was announced that travel to Europe would be open to travelers who are vaccinated and can produce a negative COVID test. My dad and I have been itching to go back to Italy. One night I was just searching for flights from San Diego to Rome and found flights round trip for $525! I tell my dad and twin sister and they were in. I text Miguel to let him know and he wanted to join! My mom hates flying so she was out and his family, unfortunately, couldn’t join because they couldn’t get the days off of work. So Miguel and I planned the two-week trip. The trip would go like this, two days in Rome, two days in Florence, two days in Vernazza, Cinque Terre, two days in Venice, four days in Amalfi, and two days in Naples. Side note: I have been to Italy three times before this trip, the first time I studied abroad there, 2nd time, I took my dad and older sister, and the 3rd time, my twin sister and I went for our 25th birthday. Okay back to the proposal story. Vernazza is a city I will always visit if I am ever back in Italy because I fell in love with that place. Miguel had been to Italy once before this trip with his older brother and cousin and I told him he had to go to Vernazza. He also fell in love with that place and had such an awesome experience. He made friends with a waiter and the chef of Ristorante Belforte. With that being said, my dad also wanted to go back to Vernazza because we had a great time when we went together so that was a done deal to visit Vernazza. Since Miguel made friends with a waiter and the chef of Ristorante Belforte, I told him we needed to eat there and dress up fancy, so he made a reservation.
I just want to reiterate this. Miguel and I planned this trip. So I knew about 90% of the trip and so I was very surprised about what he pulled when we got to Vernazza on September 16. When we got settled in our Airbnb, Miguel went on a grocery run. When he came back he said he ran into a local photographer who was offering photoshoots at an affordable price. Miguel asked me if I wanted to do it before our dinner reservation. I said yes sounds like fun! I didn’t think anything of it. There are so many photographers taking photos there so I thought what a great business in this beautiful town. So on September 17, Miguel and I hiked to a viewpoint and met with David, a local photographer. My dad and sister were also joining us to take pictures so they were right behind us. We took a couple of photos and family photos. And then David asks to just take some portraits of me. He asks me to turn around to look at the tower that is off in the distance and then he calls me again to turn around and boom. There is Miguel on one knee. My jaw drops and when I get nervous, I laugh. He tells me, “Yesenia, eres la amor di mi vida, will you marry me?” I laugh nervously, “wait are you being serious right now? I mean YES!!”
My sister and dad are cheering taking videos and pictures. My dad is also trying to FaceTime people. People who were hiking through there cheered as well and it was just all a surprise and the most perfect day. Miguel also didn’t just hire a local photographer, he hired the best photographer and he hired him literally after we knew we were going to Italy. So we had a full-on engagement photo session with David. He was amazing and I love every single photo and video he took. He has an eye! After the photo shoot, we had dinner at Ristorante Belforte and had the most amazing meal. Ugh, I could relive that day over and over and not change one bit!
