Yanai and Xavier
How We Met
Xavier and I meet 9 years ago at a Hollywood night club. From the moment we met, I knew there was something special about him. I remember telling my best friend, “Who is that? He’s really cute, I need to meet him!”. By the end of the night we had exchanged numbers and the rest was history.

The outdoors is something we are both very passionate about. We have been fortunate enough to have gone on numerous trips to many National Parks and forests. Xavier is a Wildland Firefighter with the U.S. Forest Service, and has shared his love for nature with me. So when he suggested we take a trip to Yosemite National Park, it wasn’t at all out of the ordinary. Xavier arranged that we stayed at a friends cabin near the park, and asked his sister to come along for the trip (little did I know she would be our photographer for the day).
We arrived late Friday night and settled into a beautiful cabin in the woods just outside of Yosemite. We woke up eager to get in a full day of hiking and scenic views. Xavier went to the store to “buy breakfast”, however unbeknownst to me he was buying all the flowers he could find in this little town. When he got back he made sure to hide the flowers on the back porch, and proceeded to make his sister and I breakfast. We gathered our things to begin our morning drive to Yosemite, and STILL had no clue my day would be so special.
Xavier arranged that our friends would arrive at the cabin minutes after we left to begin a carefully drawn out plan. I later saw the floor plan he drew with great detail indicating the placement of flowers, mason jars, candles, balloons, and food. Our friends arrived and began decorating and setting up what would eventually be my surprise engagement party! Meanwhile, Xavier, his sister Christina, and myself had already began our first hike at Bridalveil Falls (foreshadowing? lol). We snapped pictures at the various scenic viewpoints eventually making our way into Yosemites Valley Bottom. We came across a beautiful meadow and proceeded to take pictures.
Xavier and I walked ahead while his sister took some “practice shots” of the beautiful view. We were far enough in the meadow, as he began to tell me how much he loved me and “to take in such a perfect view” and “I could do this for the rest of my life…” and among the many sweet words. I was completely taken by surprise when he turned to me and said, ” I have something to ask you….” as he dropped to one knee. I immediately began to sob uncontrollably!
That’s when he asked “Will you marry me?” Between all the emotion running through my body, I managed to say, “Yes!” “Its perfect”.
Christina had captured the most amazing day of our lives up to this point, and was trying to hold the camera still as she too was hysterical! She was the perfect photographer as she included handmade props for us (at no extra charge). This included our “He asked..” and “She said about damn time” signs, along with a bottle of champagne from our favorite winery.
Afterwards, we spent the rest of the day taking engagement photos all over the park.
Upon leaving the park and still not believing what just happened, we agreed on staying in and ordering some pizza for dinner. I had no clue that the surprises weren’t done for the day. When we got to the cabin Xavier asked his sister to go inside and give us a “second” in the car. He said, “Everything I do , I do for you”. As we were walking to the front door, he took my hand and led me through the back of the cabin leading up to the deck over looking the forest. The deck looked like if someone had hacked my secret Pinterest board and made it a reality.
That’s when he led me inside and to my surprise, all of our closest friends were waiting to congratulate us!
It was a such an unforgettable day. So thankful to have amazing friends and the most thoughtful Fiancé that took the time to make this day so special for me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I said yes to my best friend, my soulmate and my forever adventure partner.
