How We Met
Rick and I met back at Lawndale High School. I thought he was very shy, quiet and he kept to himself. We hung out a few times (in a group setting) but never went further than that. Fast forward to 10 years later, January 14, 2017, we both went to the bars in Hermosa Beach with mutual friends.
I immediately noticed that he looked very different and didn’t seem like that shy, quiet guy anymore. As we headed to another bar, I asked him “do you still have a girlfriend?” and he replied with “no.” I went to hold his hand and he held mine as we headed to the next bar (I know, can you believe I did that!) We danced and laughed the night away. We didn’t exchange numbers, but the next morning he reached out to me through Instagram. Our conversations became longer, funnier, and overall enjoyable. Time passed, and he finally asked for my number and asked to take me on a date.
On January 28 we went to Hennesey’s for brunch at Hermosa Beach. We shared laughs, stories and there was not a single moment of awkwardness! We shared our first kiss on February 12th in Palos Verdes – he was so nervous, and so was I! The beginning of our dating frame was a bit bumpy, but we got through it and learned to grow together and grow in love. June 4, 2017, we went to Manhattan Beach and he asked me to be his girlfriend and the rest is history!
How They Asked
Rick proposed to me on July 3, 2020 (which also happened to be my 27th birthday). I was really bummed about my birthday, considering it was during COVID and nothing was open/gatherings were not allowed. Regardless of COVID, Rick was able to make my birthday THE best birthday EVER! He had me go to his house in the morning for homemade brunch. After, I went to my sister’s house to help my niece, Camila, bake cupcakes and make a cheesecake for my birthday (all part of Rick’s plan!). We planned on cutting the cake at my house, so once we were all done baking we headed to my parent’s house. As I pulled into the driveway, I saw Rick’s car and knew something was going on! I walk into my backyard and it’s beautifully decorated, food was set out and my immediate family was all there (surprise #1!). We ate, hit the pinata, cut cake, and then came time to open presents! I opened presents and as I finished, Rick mentioned: “I have one more present, but I need the kids to help”.
He gathered the kids and had me close my eyes. (Side note: Rick and I have an inside joke – whenever I make him laugh really hard, I always tell him, “I’m so funny, I can’t imagine anyone else making you this happy!!”) He stood me up, closed my eyes, and walked me to the designated spot – he whispered in my ear, “You know how you’re always saying that no one else can make me happier thank you?” Me “yea…” as I giggle. Rick responds, “Well, you’re right, no one can make me happier”.
He uncovered my eyes, and my niece and nephews were standing there holding each a bouquet of roses and signs that spelled out “Will you marry me?” I immediately got tears in my eyes! As I turn around to look at him, he’s down on one knee and asks “Will you marry me?” Including my niece and nephews was so thoughtful of Rick and was the PERFECT proposal!
