How We Met

Not every fairy-tale ending starts out so classy. To celebrate our senior year of high school, all of the girls in my class hosted a party for the boys. As any chaperoned party goes when you’re a teenager, it was fun, but more fun could be had hence the after party. We were all partying hard so let’s keep it simple and just say that a whirlwind of Jell-O shots and cheap vodka did not have me at my best.

The party was going strong until the police showed up. People were running and jumping over each other to get out of the house (I’ve been told) and that’s when I literally bumped into the man that would be my husband. He didn’t know this obviously, but it was love at first sight for me. Once all of the chaos had died down, he helped me back into the house and we talked all night. I asked him his name and he told me Colton. Obviously, this is a common name, but he was the first Colton I had ever met so I spent the next few minutes trying to convince him that he had mispronounced his own name. “Did you mean Collin? Cole? Did you say colon??”

Despite me being somewhat hard to deal with, we exchanged numbers when his friends told him they were ready to leave. I thought I would never hear from him, but about three hours later he had text me to make sure I had made it home safely. That very night we made plans to meet each other again so that I could tutor him in Spanish.

After several tutoring sessions (and finding out that he did not have a propensity for foreign language), Colton asked me on our first date. We pretty much just drove around our hometown and stopped to eat salads at a local restaurant. That date was so simple, but it is still one of my favorites. We went one a several more dates after that when we both came to the conclusion that we wanted to boyfriend and girlfriend.

how they asked

Fast forward to almost five years later, Colton had been planning a trip for us to go to Breckenridge, CO from 19-25 December 2016. He told me that we would be getting pictures taken for Christmas cards while we were there! I was sold on the idea because I had asked (read as begged) Colton for years to take pictures for Christmas cards.

I had spent the majority of my time leading up to the trip planning out our outfits not only for the photo-shoot but for each day of the trip. I won’t say I like when we match, but I like when we match. Luckily, Colton has grown to accept it.

Wednesday, 21 December 2016 rolled around and it was time to get ready to take pictures. I had done my makeup and gotten our clothes ready. We were going to look very cozy cute for these pictures. Our photographer, Rachel, was nice enough to pick us up from the apartment we were staying at and take us to a trail in the mountains. We started taking pictures while we were walking up the trail.

We did a few shots with the blanket we had brought from the apartment, so we were cuddled up close enough for me to feel Colton heartbeat.

His heart was literally racing out of his chest, but I thought it must have had something to do with us walking around at 10,000 ft. above sea level.

Colton pulled me in close to tell me something, and I assumed he was going to make a joke or say something about the plans we had for later.

It all happened so fast, but he told me that he loved me so much, that he couldn’t imagine his life without me, and that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. I was literally shaking at this point, but to add to it, he told me to close my eyes.

When he told me to open them, there he was down on one knee and asking me to marry him. I’m pretty sure I said “Well, of course” because I mean duh! I think the next few minutes involved tons of hugs and kisses and squealing and laughter, and the pictures never stopped.

What I thought was a photo-shoot for Christmas cards was actually an engagement shoot. Now, I have tons of beautiful pictures to remember the day my best friend decided to make me the happiest girl in the world. I love Colton so much and I cannot wait to start this new journey with him. Now we just need to get some picture frames for all of these amazing pictures.
