How We Met
Alex and I met junior year of high school. We were set up by friends to go to prom together. Neither of us was really looking to date, but things between us just clicked. Time flew by whenever we were together and if we weren’t together then we were on the phone talking.
And here’s the thing, I love to talk. And Alex, on the other hand, loves to listen. From then on, he became my favorite listener. We even attended the same college and here we are five years later- high school sweethearts!!!
how they asked
Alex’s family takes a beach trip every year to Destin. I went with them last year and was asked to go again this year. But Alex explained to me that this year his mom wanted to do professional family pictures on the beach. I didn’t think twice about this because everyone takes pictures on the beach. He even told me everyone was wearing white, so I should too. And even better, Alex’s two older half-brothers were going to the beach the same time we were, so they were going to be in them too. The weather the whole week was so unpredictable.
Before we left for the beach it said 80% chance of rain every day. So, of course, Alex was on edge this whole week. The beach pictures were scheduled for Wednesday at 6:30 pm. At 5:30 pm the rain rolled in. I can remember Alex pacing around that entire day and I didn’t know why. But by the grace of God, the rain stopped, the water was calm, and the sky was beautiful.
We met the photographer outside and we began taking some family pictures. Twenty minutes in, Alex’s mom asked if we wanted to get some together. So the photographer had us take some pictures walking back and forth holding hands and then she asked me to turn towards the water and have Alex stand behind me. She told us that she was just taking a picture of our silhouette so I didn’t think anything of it. But that was when Alex’s mom placed the ring box in his hand.
Alex then turned me to the side, grabbed my hand, and said, “Look who’s here.” I turned my head and saw my family standing there smiling ear to ear. And of course, I just started crying. Remember when I said Alex loves to listen? Well, it was now my time to listen. Alex shared the sweetest words and got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I knew from the moment I met Alex that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him so it was the easiest yes.
I later learned that Alex asked my dad for his blessing whenever I was in the Bahamas over spring break. So my family knew for three whole months! And not to mention, my family traveled down to the beach Tuesday morning, so they had been hiding out for two days. I couldn’t have planned anything more perfect even if I tried. Every time Alex and I watch the video, look at pictures, or even just talk about it, we can’t help but shed a tear. Our hearts are so full and we were reminded this week how important family is. And nothing will beat the smile I saw on Alex’s face.
As stressed out as Alex was, he said that he would do it all over again if he could. I wanted Alex to be a part of this blog post, so I asked him to write a few words. “As nerve wrecking as the past couple months had been, proposing to Vic was the best decision of my life. Having both of our families present, the proposal made the planning and many near slip-ups the past few months all worth it.
I wish I could keep reliving the moment she said yes – it was the happiest moment of my life so far!” I have never been so sure of something in my whole life. Alex is truly my better half. He is my greatest blessing, favorite listener, sweetest treasure, and real-life hero. I feel so lucky to be able to call him mine. I can’t wait to be Mrs. Fordham!!
