Victoire and Matthew
How We Met
Matthew and I met at a summer program orientation the summer before our freshman year at Indiana University-Bloomington. The program is called GROUPS (S/O to G9!) and we were placed in the same testing room. However, we didn’t officially speak to one another until his sister, Titilayo, introduced us during the first GROUPS party a few weeks later. From that day on, we were inseparable. He became my best friend, study partner, and confidante. We exchanged Blackberry Messenger (who remembers BBM??) contacts and would talk all day, every day. We were there for each other through family hardships, exams, pledging into sororities & fraternities, birthdays, etc. Our friendship went on for 3 years, into our junior year. Matthew FINALLY asked me to be his girlfriend during fall 2011 of our Junior year and the rest is history.
how they asked
The weekend before Matthew proposed was our Valentine’s Day weekend and he had gone all out with pampering, romance, nice dinner… all of it. I was SURE he was proposing by the end of that night, so when he didn’t I was so disappointed. Emotionally drained from trying to guess his next move, I gave up trying to guess. So when he proposed the following weekend on February 24th, I was completely caught off guard. It started out as just a regular Saturday. I’m in my 2nd year of law school and on this particular weekend I had a ton of work to do so we were on our way to campus for me to study. Matthew suggested we swing by Millenium Park for a walk before studying. I’ve lived in Chicago for nearly 2 years now, and had seen everything there is to see at Millenium Park a hundred times, so I was confused why he wanted to be bothered by all the tourists on that day of all days. I went without protest anyways.. welcoming any excuse to put off studying. When we go there, Matthew directed us towards The Bean. He suggested we take a picture in front of it, in the exact spot we took our first picture together when we first visited Chicago. I started to pull my phone out, but he quickly pulled his out first and ran to find a stranger to take our picture. I remember wondering why he was talking to the stranger for so long.
It doesn’t take more than 30 seconds to ask for a picture. I later learned he was telling him right then and there that he was about to propose and asking him to shoot a video instead of taking a picture. I should have known something was up because the entire group of people who Matthew had approached pulled out their phones instead of just one of them… but I still had no idea. In the video, you see us setting our school bags down after Matthew suggested we don’t include them in the picture. Again, I still had no idea… because I was about to pose with my big ol’ bag on my shoulder. As we got to our picture spot, Matthew starts saying “Baby… you know I love you and I can’t wait to make you my wife.” The moment I heard the way the word “Baby” come out of his mouth, was the moment I realized “OMG its actually happening!” He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him! I completely forgot that we were surrounded by strangers and I still have the image of Matthew on his knee, smiling up at me, burned in my memory. It wasn’t until everyone started clapping around us did I look up and notice the whole crowd smiling at us and cheering us on. On February 24, 2018 I had the best day of my life and I got to witness the power of love! Matthew Kumalo, I am deeply, madly, and eternally in love with you. We are about to have a blast babyyy.
