How We Met
In the summer of of 2014, I took a trip to Vegas with some friends. On my flight back, I got stranded at the airport in Midland, Texas. At the time I was extremely annoyed, but looking back at the moment, it was the best flight delay of my life. For the months leading up to that fateful day, I had been a member of Match. Both Veronica and I were hesitant to sign up at first because we figured kids our age(23) didn’t normally use Match, we figured it was for an older crowd. In fact, the only reason Veronica signed up was to support a coworker who also wanted to register. I had conversed with some matches, but nothing had yielded results yet. That day in the airport, I struck up a conversation with a very special girl. When I noticed she owned a dog too, I knew I had an ice breaker.
After talking for a couple weeks, I decided to take the leap and suggest that we meet in person. Although she agreed, the first 2 arranged meetings ended up being canceled from her end. We had decided to meet up for drinks a 3rd time, but I knew if this time didn’t work, it wasn’t meant to be. As I sat on the patio of the West End Pub, nervously drinking my Gin and Tonic, I hoped with every inch that she would show. I can’t even describe the butterflies I had in my stomach when I saw a beautiful, dark haired girl walk up to the table. After the first awkward couple of minutes, we both settled down and really began to gel. One thing led to another, and after several months of spending time together, we decided to make it official.
how they asked
Fast forward 2.5 years, and I found myself standing in Robbins Brothers, buying the perfect ring for the perfect girl. We were going on a ski trip with my family, and there was nothing more that I wanted to to take her to the top of world. After all, that’s how I felt whenever I was with her. I was hopeful Veronica would pick up skiing quickly, which she did, despite having never skied before. I knew she would need to be able to go tackle a blue run if I had any chance of getting her to the location on the mountain that I wanted to propose. Luckily, my family was there to help her down, because I had overestimated how quickly she had learned. Don’t worry, she had been very vocal on sharing her displeasure with my choice of run. Here I was with a ring sitting in my jacket, beginning to question if this turn of events would ruin my months of planning.
Despite my family hinting that we had a great location for “pictures”, Veronica insisted she didn’t want to try that run again and that she didn’t need to partake in the photos. Luckily, my brother-in-law suggested an alternate route that would be easy to get down. With my sister standing beside us with the go pro recording, I asked the easiest question of my life. Being caught completely off-guard and filled with emotion, a tear-filled nod of the head was all Veronica could muster up. For me, it was a perfect representation of how surprised and overcome with joy she was. For her, it was the moment she had been dreaming about since she was a little girl.
