How We Met
Jack and I met Sophomore year of college in the spring of 2013. We were in the same friend group, so him and his friends would hang around my suite a bunch of times during the week. I honestly didn’t think too much about him until the night of the Oscars that year. The film department hosted a party and projected the Oscars on a big screen. As we were going to sit down, one of his friends said “Oh, you should sit here next to Jack!” I was definitely a little nervous since my friends were now all sitting at the end of the row and I was sitting next to Jack and his friends all night. I ended up having a great time talking with him about movies. He invited me to a party afterwards, but I said I couldn’t go because I had a test the next day. When I finally reconnected with my friends, they basically told me that I was stupid for saying no and that Jack really wanted me to go. I eventually gave in and decided to go. The look on his face when I showed up was priceless! After talking for hours that night, he asked me for my phone number. He texted me later that night while I was up all night studying for my test, saying that he had a great time. I remember having the biggest smile on my face that whole next day. Our friends eventually got involved and told him that I wanted to go out with him. The rest is history!
How They Asked
Flash forward 6 years, Jack lives and works in Baltimore now and I am a student in Philadelphia. We spend most of our weekends together and he suggested that we take a trip back to Buffalo to walk around campus and revisit the place we met. The weather was perfect that day! We pulled into campus and I already started to get emotional since we hadn’t been back since graduation! We walked around the entire campus, stopping to go into our old dorms and classroom buildings that meant a lot to us. We talked about our memories at different spots. We went across the street to Delaware Park and enjoyed looking out over the water. Jack mentioned that he wanted to visit the campus ministry where he used to work. We walked in to visit with the Father and Jack stepped out to go to the bathroom. When he returned, the Father mentioned that we should visit the chapel downstairs. In the back corner is a little kitchen area. In college, Jack would work there on Thursday nights and would text me when he was finished to pick me up for date night. We stood in that kitchen and Jack told me that it was in that spot, thinking about me all those Thursday nights, that he knew he loved me. He said that he carved his initials in the cabinet and when he bent down on his knee to “check”, he pulled out the ring! My best friend asked me to marry him and I said yes!
