How We Met
Shawell and I met in the summer of 2009 when we both started working at the wedding venue The Grandview in Poughkeepsie. I had noticed him from the start but soon found out that he was already dating someone else.
Flash forward one year, and through a mutual friend, I discovered he was finally single and had that friend put in a good word for me. And that’s all it took, he immediately contacted me and we started hanging out and right before my 21st birthday, we made it boyfriend/girlfriend official.
How They Asked
Nine years later I was getting very impatient for a ring. We had been living together going on 5 years and I was starting to feel like it would never happen. For anyone out there who has been in a long term relationship, I’m sure you can relate. And it wasn’t just me, I would get questions about it constantly from friends and family. I would start to psych myself up before every holiday or major event only to be disappointed.
Then a few months before my 30th birthday in order to calm myself down I started convincing myself that it would have to happen that night. He was throwing me a party, I didn’t know the details but I knew my friends, my family, and his family would be there. Once the night of the party came and I was mingling with all of my people I wasn’t even thinking about the proposal. Until it came time for cake. After being sung to and blowing out my candles I turned around to find Shawell down on one knee with all of our loved ones behind him. To say that I was in shock was an understatement. He cried, I cried it was picture perfect and all I remember him saying was “thank you for being you, I love you, will you marry me?” And the answer was without a doubt a YES!
