How We Met
From Anthony’s POV: The first time I met her I was enchanted. Her smile, her laugh, her beauty, her wit. I was hooked. She, on the other hand, was not so enthused. I had just settled in at UCLA and my roommates were planning to have some of their friends over that they met during the summer, Vanessa, being one of them. Right when she came through the door she had my attention. I spent all night trying to talk with her. It took a while until I convinced her to have lunch with me on campus. She gave me one chance and literally told me it was “now or never!” We talked, and talked, and talked. Each time I saw her it was like reading the next chapter of the book you cannot put down. Soon enough we were inseparable, and in time she even began to like me too :)
How They Asked
For months, Anthony built up anticipation for his work’s “annual awards gala.” He told me he found out he was going to receive the “Provider of the Year Award.” I believed him without thinking twice because I know he’s amazing at what he does and on top of that, he works harder than anyone I know. I was SO proud of him that I didn’t even have the slightest intuition he was scheming something else.
In the weeks leading up to the event, we received a formal invitation with letterhead and all. I was able to get the day off (thanks to Anthony secretly emailing my supervisor) and we booked a hotel in DTLA near the venue. I bought a dress and did my hair and make up for this “gala.” Of course, running on Vanessa time, we were rushing to get there. When we arrived, I still had no idea what was about to happen. The man at the front desk greeted us with a big smile, put a mic on Anthony, and said to him “this is for your acceptance speech, you’re up first.” Again, I still had no clue.
The whole time we were rushing to get up the building, I kept thinking “I hope my hair is okay and my red lipstick isn’t smeared or on my teeth.” As we exited the elevator and began to approach the balcony, all I was thinking was “aww that’s SO pretty and romantic with all the rose petals in the wind.”
Then, he led me ahead to the doors which were opened for us and as we began walking out, I heard the song Anthony always sings to me, “Perfect” (the cello version). He stood in front of me, grabbed my hands nervously smiling, and that’s when it hit. I was so shocked, I felt like I couldn’t breathe. All I could do was smile and laugh ~
