How We Met
Our love story began 10 years ago in Sayville Middle School. John and I met in the 8th grade in Spanish Class. He began walking me after class to my locker and then my twin brother Kyle found out and played matchmaker. Needless to say to this date Kyle wants all the credit to our relationship but he truly is the one that set us up. John asked me out in the middle school hallways and asked for my number and the rest is history.
John and I dated all through high school. Every Friday I would wear his football jersey to school and go watch his and my twin brother’s games on the weekend. We were a big football family. In return, John would never miss a Dance Recital or performance of mine. We were so supportive of each other and really were just two kids in love. We attended our Jr. Prom and Senior Prom together and boy oh boy did he look handsome. We ended up getting voted Class Couple our Senior Year of High School. We grew up together, a real-life fairy tale.
John would then attend Stonybrook University on a scholarship for football when I pursued my dream of becoming an elementary school teacher at St. Josephs College. Our schedules were crazy during the week but it only made our love grow stronger and I would go visit him on the weekends at Stonybrook and go see him do what he loved under the lights on Saturday Nights. Through college every year we would go to Montauk our favorite place in the world to get away just him and I. This would become our place.
After I graduated college I landed my dream job and John was over the moon excited to see me beginning my future and we knew we could not imagine our future without each other. John was finishing his degrees at Stonybrook because he was red shirted for football and had extra years of eligibility. We still felt like those crazy kids in love so excited to travel all over from NYC, Atlantic City, Florida, Bermuda and the Bahamas. But one special place was still our favorite. This past July with me having of the summer and John working more hours be booked a little getaway in Montauk, never did I imagine the dream proposal that was in my near future.
How They Asked
My middle school sweetheart asked me to be his wife? We were vacationing in our favorite spot Montauk, New York where we had been vacationing ever since our senior after prom! He drove us down to the beach next to Gurneys before dinner and we began to walk into the beach. At first, I was not processing that this was what was happening that this was real life, It was that moment when John Haggart turned to me and looked at me and said “Valerie you know how much I love you right? and I instantaneously knew that this was THE MOMENT you wait your whole life for. He continued to ask me to be his wife and got down on one knee and my whole heart as corny as it sounds literally melted it was just us at the moment that I wanted to last forever.
He then took the ring out and my heart nearly stopped being the most beautiful ring I could only dream of. It truly signifies how beautiful our love story is and how two kids falling in love and growing together and how special that is. After he asked me in Bachelor style if I would accept the final rose. We finally ended up eating at Gurney’s and celebrating with a Champagne toast.
It was my literal dream come true and the best part is that we got to celebrate our engagement just us before sharing the news with our friends and family.
So there it is… I am marrying my person, my middle school sweetheart and my soul mate all wrapped in one. We couldn’t be happier to share the news with everyone and to plan our dream wedding. So the countdown has officially begun and we cannot wait to start our forever officially! #justsaidyes #MurriedtoHaggart
