How We Met
John and I met at Lake Hills Church in Austin, Texas in August of 2013. After years of going to the same church and watching John lead worship on Sunday mornings, we finally met when I started leading in the high school ministry. For the first few months, we were just acquaintances. We would say hi in passing, but that was the extent of our relationship. In January of 2014, the high school ministry had their Winter Retreat for the students at Camp T Bar M in New Braunfels, Texas. Late Friday night, well after we had arrived and settled in, John found himself talking and joking around with Dan Underhill, our student pastor, and Matt Ferstler, a good friend of ours. At some point during the conversation, Dan and Matt told John that they thought he should ask me out on a date. On January 21, 2014, a couple of days after returning from the retreat, I received a Facebook message from John asking if I wanted to meet him for lunch that afternoon. Since that day, we have only spent a handful of days apart!
how they asked
The day John asked me to be his wife was one of the most amazing days of my life! Although I knew we were going to get engaged some time soon, he did an amazing job of making his proposal such a huge surprise.
August 22, 2014, was just a normal day, or so I thought. A good friend of ours had asked me if I could babysit their two sweet girls for a good portion of the day. What I didn’t know at the time was that John actually asked them to ask me to babysit so that he could have the day to prepare for his proposal. That night, there was a Westlake High School football scrimmage that we were supposed to go to. John is the radio color analyst for the football games, so he told me that we needed to be there so he could take care of a few things before the season officially started. John told me that he would pick me up from my house after I got done babysitting so we could go grab a quick dinner before heading to the scrimmage.
While we were at dinner, John got a text (that was pre-planned) from Wesley Lunsford who is a good friend of John’s as well as one of the worship leaders at Lake Hills. In his text, Wesley told John that he had something for him and was wondering if he could swing by the church at some point that evening to pick it up. Little did I know that John actually sent that text to Wesley earlier in the day and asked him to send it to him while we were at dinner.
After dinner, we were in a hurry to make it over to the football stadium in Westlake. On our way, John told me that he was going to stop by the church to pick up something from Wesley. I was a little concerned that we were going to be late to the scrimmage, but he reassured me that it would only take him a couple of minutes. As John was getting out of the car at church, I started to get out as well. John stopped me and told me to stay in the car because we were in a hurry and he was just going to run in and out. While it was a little odd that he would tell me to stay in the car, I didn’t think anything of it. A few minutes later, I got a text from him telling me to come inside to say hi to some friends of ours. As I walked into the church, I noticed that the doors to the sanctuary were closed and it was extremely quiet. At this point, I knew something was up because the worship team was supposedly rehearsing at this time. During rehearsals, the sanctuary doors are usually open and it is anything but quiet! As I approached the doors to the sanctuary, one of my sweet friends, Stephanie Kelsheimer, opened the doors and greeted me with a hug and a huge smile. I looked around and saw one of my dearest friends, Jenny Taunton, walking towards me taking pictures. It was at that time that someone started singing from the stage. As I looked up, I saw John on stage with Wesley and Keaton (another one of our good friends). I had always told him that I would love for him to sing me a song when he proposed, but he always told me that he would never do that and that he had another idea. As Stephanie escorted me to my seat, I noticed some other friends of ours sitting in the back.
As I sat listening to John sing, I was in absolute awe of the Lord. The man I had been praying for my entire life was about to ask me to marry him. I couldn’t believe that God had chosen me to be John’s wife. When John finished the song, he jumped off the stage and picked up a little black box under the chair next to me. He told me how much he loved me and that he wanted us to spend the rest of our lives together. He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him…and the answer was obviously a resounding YES!!!
We made our way outside to take a few pictures before heading off to the football scrimmage, or so I thought. Once we got in the car, John told me that my parents and sister were at his parent’s house and that we were going to swing by briefly to take a few more pictures with everyone. As we walked through the door of the house, we were greeted by family and friends. Once again, John had tricked me! What I thought was just dinner and a football game actually ended up being dinner, a proposal and an engagement party!
One of the most amazing things about John is that he loves the Lord way more than he could ever love me, and knowing that is so humbling. We are so excited to find out what God has in store for our life together.
