Danielle and Tyler
How We Met
Tyler and I met in our freshman year at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. I moved from Washington State to further pursue my dream of playing collegiate softball, and he was a local recruit from Gilbert High School in Gilbert, AZ to play baseball. We saw each other at many events through school and softball/baseball and the attraction was mutual. We became fast friends. What drew me to Tyler was his charm, he truly is a gentlemen and has the biggest heart. He took me to the Phoenix Zoo for Valentines day, and asked me to be his girlfriend. It was so genuine. I, of course, said yes. We both left GCU after our freshman years, he went to play baseball at the University of New Mexico and I went home, to finish my softball career with girls I grew up playing with but to most importantly pursue my dream to become a registered nurse. We did long distance for a long 3 &1/2 years. We would be liars to tell you that it was easy! But, we always pushed through and made it work – we knew it was worth it. I moved back to Phoenix September of 2014 because I got accepted into nursing school here, Tyler had yet another transfer, but finished school and baseball in Texas, and returned home May of 2015.
how they asked
how they asked: 04/05/16
My sister (Katie), her husband (Austin) and my niece (Lilah) came to Phoenix to visit. We had talked and talked about ideas of what to do while they were here, and one of the things I insisted we do was Butterfly Wonderland, Lilah loves bugs of any kind and the place is so cool! So, on a Tuesday afternoon we went to see the butterflies. I was completely oblivious to what was really going on. We walked through the atrium, snapping pictures of the different kinds of butterflies. There is a part of the atrium where the trail winds around, goes up a few steps and there is a platform among the dense, humid environment. I saw my sister, Katie, and my niece kneeling down on the side. So, I kneeled down and asked “what are you doing?” My sister just kept looking to her left, so I looked and my eyes caught a photographer in the bushes! It was so weird, because I knew the face – but couldn’t place her (come to find out it is our family photographer and more importantly family friend, Rachel, who flew in from Seattle to be a part of all of this). I see Tyler in the middle of the platform *jaw drop* and realize what may be going on……Tyler hugged me, told me how much he loved me and how these past five years together have meant so much to him, got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I, of course, said yes.
