Travis and Maria's Hiking Proposal
how we met – Travis
Maria and I both attended Mount St. Mary’s University. We were introduced to one another in the second week of school through mutual friends. We both knew one another but never hung out unless friend groups brought us together. It wasn’t until the Spring of Sophomore year (2013) when we had our first class together. She sat behind me and with me now having a big crush on her, it naturally was my worst class because I spent most of my time not looking at the board. I built up the courage to ask her to study with me as an excuse to hang out with her.
We’d play basketball late at night where we’d talk and get to know each other, which led us to start watching one another’s favorite movies. Hers was ’10 Things I Hate About You’ and mine was ‘Hitch’. From there we started hanging out more and more including the first place we went off campus together which was on a hike in Cunningham Falls Park, MD. Little did I know how much more that hike would symbolize throughout our relationship. We finally went on our first official date on July 2nd, 2013. 3 years, 2 different continents, 5 different states. Our relationship has been spent mostly via long distance, with ups and downs and lots of traveling to knew places – just like a hike. Which led us to Friday, April 29th…
how they asked – Maria
Travis and I have been dating for almost 3 years now. After we graduated in May 2015 I got a job in Arizona while Travis stayed in his hometown in Pennsylvania. We had done long distance before (since I am originally from Buffalo, NY, and we only saw each other at school. Plus I studying abroad in Italy for a semester while we were dating), but this time was very different. It had been a hard year of missing each other, working our first big kid jobs, and waiting for the proposal to come, which was excruciating. So when Travis came and surprised me Wednesday April 27th, I was a bit suspicious. My sister-in-law and I had gotten our nails done together the week before, but that was about the only thing I had done when it happened, mainly because I was expecting it to happen Friday night. My brother had asked us to come to dinner, and I was sure that it would happen there. WOW WAS I WRONG! One of my friends Clare and I always try to go hiking on Friday mornings. AZ has some amazing mountains, so it’s a fun way to workout. Travis had been wanting to get to know Clare and her sister Sammy who I’ve become super close with the past year! He suggested a Friday hike, and without thinking I said duh!
Friday morning we met Sammy and Clare at their house, and I noticed they both had huge backpacks. They said they were for snacks, and I wasn’t suspicious of that in the slightest! We got to the mountain and hiked to the peak. The view was amazing so we were taking tons of pictures! Somehow we managed to have the peak all to ourselves! Then Sammy told me to go to the very tip and do some poses. I went up alone at first, and was jokingly doing a ton of yoga poses facing away from them. Then Travis came up behind me and gave me a hug. He said, “do you remember the first time we ever hung out alone? We went on a hike, and took our very first picture together.” Then he started getting super cheesy, which he never does in front of people! When his voice started to shake it clicked… He was about to propose. As he said more ridiculously sweet things I silently was freaking out!
He finally turned me around, got down on one knee on the hard rocks, and asked if I’d spend the rest of my life with him!!!!! I was freaking out so much I almost forgot to say yes! How surprised was I? I was without makeup, covered in sweet, my hair was a mess, and I was wearing an old baggy t-shirt, but it was perfect. Sammy and Clare even surprised us with signs they had made for a mini photo shoot!
Later he surprised me with a party at one of my favorite restaurants! Even though our parents were a thousand miles away, I couldn’t have asked for a better day! I can’t wait to finally marry the man of my dreams!
