How We Met: Garrett and I were in the same first grade class at CB Smith School in Pekin, Illinois. We saw each other across our coloring books and it was love at first sight. Not exactly. Garrett and I grew up together and have always been friends. It wasn’t until the end of my junior year of college that we took notice of one another romantically. A group of friends had taken me out for my 21st birthday and Garrett had been paying special attention to me the whole night. He even mustered up the courage to ask me out on a date. I said no. He kept trying and later that summer we finally went on first date. The rest, as they say, is history!
how they asked: I had just come home from a trip to Africa and Garrett was just getting ready to leave for a 6-month deployment to Kuwait (he’s in the Air Force). He called me and told me it was a date night and to dress ready to be outside. He took me for a picnic dinner to the spot we had our very first “real” date. After dinner, he asked me if I wanted to go to the Water Tower in Peoria Heights. I was excited to go because this was one of the first places Garrett ever took me before we began going on dates that we actually labeled as dates. We got to the top of the tower and our photographer friend was standing there with her camera. At this point I knew what was coming but tried to play it cool. Garrett then told me all the reasons he loved me and got down on one knee and asked me to spend forever with him! After laughing and hugging him for what seemed like forever I said yes! He then handed me a note and said “I wrote what I really wanted to say down because I knew it would come out wrong”. It was so sweet and the whole thing was definitely the best day of my life!
