How We Met
I am pretty sure that Austin and I first met when we were 7 years old at our dad’s work Christmas party. We almost went to the same school together in grade 7 – I even walked into his classroom. However, we never actually meet until we were 19 years old.
One evening in June 2012, I was chatting with his mom and we ended up making plans for her kids to join me at my weekly youth group that weekend. Austin came out that week, and continued to for the rest of the summer.
We started dating that fall, and after 3 years, 3 months and 3 days of some long-distance relationships, countless adventures, lots of study dates and a million laughs, he asked me to marry him.
how they asked
Austin and I had talked a lot about getting married in the months leading up to our engagement. I was a little impatient for him to ask. (Okay, a lot.) Everytime he planned a date for us, I was sure he was going to propose then.
On October 3, we were going to Toronto for a Leafs game. I wanted to make the most of the day, so I suggested we go earlier in the day and visit the Distillery District. I had sent him a link to the website, and he agreed that it looked like a neat place to visit. Because I was the one who planned the trip here, I wasn’t expecting anything.
When we walked into the Distillery District that day, I saw the Love Locks right away and said we should take a picture in front of them, but Austin said we should wait until we were on our way out at the end of the day. We walked around all day, ate good food, and I was enjoying myself. It was late afternoon and we were getting ready to leave when Austin suggested we go take a picture at the Love Locks then.
We walked there and I was about to ask a stranger to take a picture of us in front of it. Austin said we should wait a minute, until there was no one in front of it. He gave his phone to a stranger to take a picture and we went to stand in front of the Love Locks. I had my arm around him and was smiling for the camera when he said “Just wait a second, I have something here” and pulled away from me to reach into his pocket. I realized immediately what was happening and promptly burst into tears. He pulled a lock out of his pocket and said “I brought a lock that we can add to the Love Locks” and on the lock was a ring! He then pulled the ring off the lock and got down on one knee and asked me to marry him, and I said yes!
We added the lock with our initials and dates onto the Love Locks and are hoping to go back there every year to see it again!
(A special thanks to our “photographer” for realizing what was happening and managing to get a video of our proposal! So exciting that our special moment was captured!)
