Tips for Taking Non-Traditional Engagement Photos from Designer Donna Morgan
When it comes to engagement photos, there seem to be many standards that couples stick to – outdoor settings, go-to poses, save-the-date signs, and so on. While we’re all for certain traditions, we’re also huge fans of wildly creative engagement shoots. Since it’s one of the rare times you get to have this much fun together, why not do something unique!
To help inspire you, we’ve asked dress brand Donna Morgan to share three of the most important tips when dreaming up your shoot. Read on for all their great ideas.
Tell your story
Engagement shoots are focused on one thing – you as a couple. Your photos should reflect your relationship up until this momentous event of getting engaged. Consider taking them in the same location you met or went on your first date to add a sentimental element to your photos.
Always wanted to go on a specific vacation as a couple? Use this plan as a reason to have a destination photoshoot. Have children or pets? Bring them with you and include them in some of your photos, just make sure the focal point stays on you as a couple and does not turn solely into a family photoshoot.
Include elements that show who you are as a couple
Is Star Wars your favorite movie? Do you enjoy baking? Do you play soccer every weekend? Integrate props into your storyline that say a little about you. Instead of writing just your engagement date on a chalkboard, you can bake cookies in the shape of your ring, wear Darth Vader helmets in your photos, or spray paint your wedding date on a soccer field – be creative!

Dress up and look your best. The better you and your partner feel the more your photos will shine. If who you are is a casual person, by all means, take some photos in a t-shirt and jeans. But also be sure to dress up for some of your poses to add a bit of variety to your photos.
Opt for a dress that makes you feel stunning (here are some from Donna Morgan). Consider channeling your future bride by choosing a white (or soft-colored) dress. Save the long, flowing dress for the wedding and go for a shorter, feminine style (you can even wear it again for your bridal shower!).
