Tim and Ashley
How We Met
My fiance and I had been together for over 9 years. We met at a college party in our junior year of college through a mutual friend and hit it off immediately. There were a lot of reasons over the years for us to split up: long distance, family tragedy, even just that we met so young, but as the years went on it was clear that despite all obstacles we belonged together. After purchasing our first home together with the previous Spring it seemed an engagement was in the near future, and I certainly had my suspicions that it would happen in the Summer of 2019.
How They Asked
Since I had so long to dream up this moment I had plenty of time to drop hints to Tim about how I had always imagined it – never in my wildest dreams did I think he would be able to pull in every element of my dreams! On July 26th Tim and I strolled down to the Newburyport, MA boardwalk for what I thought would be a casual drink with friends on the water during a beautiful summer night and that’s when the magic happened.
We were at the most scenic spot in one of our favorite New England seaside towns when I saw the set-up he had laid out to propose. As we rounded the corner I heard ‘God Only Knows’ by the Beach Boys playing (what I told him I wanted for a first dance song), I saw our dog pop out of the bushes wearing an ‘I Do Too’ bandana, and I smelled the wine he had chilling from the local vineyard we knew we would someday get married at. All this alone would have been a lot to take in at once, but as an added bonus one of my best friends appeared out of nowhere with her camera to capture photos of our special moment.
I was so excited and surprised that I got down on one knee to pet our dog, not realizing that this wasn’t my role in the proposal! Once I regained my composure and stood up I saw Tim take out the ring, open the box, and mutter those four little words I had waited so long to hear: “Will You Marry Me?” I’m sure I somehow muttered a yes before helping Tim up and wrapping my arms around him. It was all I could have ever wanted…but wait there’s more!
Remember those friends we were meeting downtown at the waterfront? Tim told me that they were at a brewery on the other end of town where we could go to meet them, dog in tow. We walked into the brewery and to my surprise, again, there were 25 of our closest family and friends! The place was decked out with ‘She Said Yes’ banners, balloons, a cake, gifts, it was more than I ever could have dreamed! Am impromptu engagement party that Tim had pulled off with the help of my Mom and closest friends. I couldn’t believe that he had rallied so many people to come out and share in this special moment in our lives and that everyone he invited was actually excited to take part. How lucky are we to be so loved by so many!
As the years of our relationship wore on I was tough on Tim about when our turn would finally come to make it official. Looking back I wouldn’t change a second of the wait because it was well worth it to see the excitement on his face, not only that he had pulled off this grand gesture, but that he was just as excited to marry me as I am to marry him. Good things come to those who wait <3
