How We Met

Eric and I had initially met online almost four years ago. I had just finished college and wanted to find someone to spend time with. Eric, who had begun his career, wanted to get out there and meet someone also. He was the 15th or so person I had chose to go on a date with, but I was his 1st. (Lol :) ). We met for dinner in the city we both (coincidentally went to college in and went to a movie afterwards. We hit it off instantly. Soon after we began dating and have been inseparable ever since.

how they asked

For several months Eric had tried to get me to take off a “day” to myself…well a day to hang out with each other because we both are so busy all the time. I finally gave in and scheduled June 12, because that was the day he could get, off. We planned to go to D.C. to check out museums because we both love museums/history so much. He was set on going to National Museum of African American History and Culture. I had already visited the museum a couple of months prior, so I was fine if we couldn’t get day of tickets. Eric woke up at 6:30 that morning (which he never wakes up that early on a day off) to get us tickets to the museum. So we headed to D.C. around 9 and got to the museum around 10:15. We were going through the first floor, and then up to the second which has a lot of Civil Rights exhibits. We saw the Loving v. Virginia exhibit–me being a law student I had always mentioned this case throughout our relationship and it’s significance–so Eric started to look for someone to take our photo in front of it (we are an interracial couple). A man took our picture and then Eric asked if he could take one more and started fumbling around with his backpack. I turned around and Eric was down on one knee and asked me to marry him in front of the exhibit. I of course said yes. After I said yes, he looked at me and said “Today is the 50th anniversary of this case.” So on the 50th anniversary of the case ruling Virginia’s anti-miscegenation law unconstitutional, the love of my life asked me to marry him. He’s not a man of many words–and I’m never short on them, but he took my breath away and I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with him. We are getting married on our 5th “anniversary” next September.
