How We Met
Justin and I met in the summer of 2013. We had recently graduated from Clemson University and were both attending a friend’s wedding. He grew up with the bride and groom and was actually a groomsman, and the bride was my sorority sister. During college, we knew of each other, although never had the chance to meet. Justin claims he knew who I was, and always thought I was cute! So back to this wedding… We both seemed to catch each other’s attention throughout the night, and ended up spending the remainder of the night inseparable.
After the wedding, we managed to go to the same after party, and were even staying in the same hotel. We talked into the wee hours of the morning about everything, and I knew at that moment that I was hooked! (Plus he still thought I was cute, even after I stuck my tongue out in the first picture we took together) Thankfully we were living in the same city at that time, which made dating a real possibility. Two weeks later we were officially a couple!
how they asked
Justin and I had talked about marriage a lot, and so around the time of our three year dating anniversary, I started to get anxious for the next step. Justin being the gentleman that he is insisted that a proposal be done the right way, and so I waited. And goodness, am I glad that I did! In August of 2016, my mom had a pre-scheduled work trip to Charleston that my dad happened to be tagging along for. I mentioned to Justin about a week prior to their arrival that they were going to be coming down from Delaware, and that they would love for us to spend the weekend with them there. Little did I know, Justin immediately went into planning mode at that time. He already had the ring, and was just waiting for the perfect opportunity. (I should have prefaced the story with the details that Justin is currently in medical school, and finishing up his last year.) We had everything set and planned to go down to Charleston on Saturday after Justin finished with his shift at the hospital.
Friday night, I get a text from Justin telling me that unfortunately, he’s going to have to stay later than expected, and that he’ll no longer be able to come to Charleston. Knowing that this sort of thing comes up, I was disappointed, but quickly rebounded and was excited to see my parents. I drove down to Charleston early Saturday morning, and met my parents at their hotel. We had plans to go to a nice lunch, but my dad suggested taking a detour to the pier at Waterfront Park to look at the water and boats. Being the planner that I am, I insisted we only look for a few minutes or else we’d be late for lunch. We walk down to the end of the pier and are looking around, taking everything in, and that’s when I looked to the right and saw Justin all the way at the end, waiting for me. My heart skipped about 100 beats.
Thinking he should have been at the hospital helping to deliver babies or in bed sleeping, I knew at that point it was happening. Justin had devised a plan so that he could come down to Charleston Friday night, and ask for my parent’s blessing!
I made my way down the pier for what felt like the longest walk ever. Justin then got down on one knee and asked me to spend forever with him, and of course I said YES! He had included his parents in the surprise as well, and we all got to spend the rest of the weekend together celebrating.
I wanted a surprise proposal, but never expected it to be as amazing as it was.
