How We Met
When I got a Facebook message one day trying to figure out where he’d heard my name before, I thought Nick was absolutely insane. We talked over Facebook for about two days, and the longer we talked, the more I felt like he was familiar, too. He finally asked me if he could call me so we could talk (the first time he called I was so nervous that I ran away from the phone!), and we talked for almost three hours about EVERYTHING; our aspirations, our fears, our future plans.
After about a week of talking, we were never able to figure out how we knew each other (though we did have a handful of mutual friends), but he asked me on our first date!
When I stepped out of the car, he saw me and called my name, and I felt like I was going to faint. Something in me knew immediately that he was special! We went to a local Panera (we bonded over our love of bread and caesar salad), and when we finished eating, neither of us wanted to go home, so we went to an abandoned psychiatric center and walked around the grounds. To most, this sounds like the weirdest first date ever…to me, it was everything I ever could have wanted (I’m a HUGE horror fan, but he didn’t know at the time!)
7 months into our relationship, at a film festival for one of his films
After a 7-hour-long first date, he told me he was going to Paris for work for a week, and I thought that was going to be the last I heard from him. Little did I know that a few weeks later, he’d take me to a private beach and ask me to be his girlfriend!
how they asked
On Valentine’s Day of 2016, he planned a whole day for us. We went to Build-a-Bear to make a sloth (my favorite animal), we went out for our favorite egg sandwiches, and as a surprise, he took me to a jewelry store to try on engagement rings. At first I thought it was just a part of the day, but I found out (accidentally, of course) that he had ordered the ring that I fell in love with when I went to go get the car.
Two months later, our three-year-anniversary came around, and he didn’t propose. I was so confused because I was sure that he was going to do it on our anniversary! I knew he had it, I knew it was coming…but the anticipation was killing me!
The Saturday after our anniversary, he told me he wanted to do something fun because he knew I’d been stressed about work. He wouldn’t tell me what it was, but he packed us into the car (our new puppy Harvey included), and he surprised me by driving us to the beach where he asked me to be his girlfriend three years ago. I had a feeling it was coming, but we wandered around on the beach with our puppy for almost 45 minutes before he asked me if I was ready to head home, so I figured it wasn’t going to happen.
As we walked back to the car, he let me get ahead of him because he said the dog was holding him up. I was halfway back to the car when he called my name from behind me, and I turned around and he was on one knee! I ran over, totally in shock, and just stared at him with my hand over my mouth.
“We’ve been through a lot in the last three years, and I couldn’t think of a better friend to spend the rest of my life with…will you marry me?” he asked.
I immediately started crying…and forgot to answer! He had to ask me “so is that a yes?” before I could compose myself enough to say anything. (You can tell in the picture, too…my eyeliner was EVERYWHERE.)
Obviously I did, because here I am now telling the story! It was magical, and I couldn’t be happier to be marrying the man of my dreams.
