How We Met: We were just 17 years old when we first started dating (our official anniversary is November 7th, 2008). I remember thinking to myself “this is what they mean by love at first sight” the first time I laid eyes on Jake. We were inseparable from day one and as high school came to an end the reality of college sunk in.
I had been accepted to Radford University in Radford, Virginia and would soon be moving 4 hours south of our home town. I cannot tell you how hard it was to move away, but as always Jake stayed strong for us both and supported me and gave me confidence that I could do anything I wanted in life. I graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Fashion Design in 2013 and could not wait to finally move back home and be done with long distance!
Jake and I have been together ever since and I could not imagine my life without him. The black and white photo is Jake and I at 17 followed by a picture of Jake and I at Relay for Life celebrating and honoring his sister; Jessica Randall, who passed away at the age of 17 from brain cancer. The last photo is of Jake and I at 24, just weeks before he proposed!
how they asked: Jake and I rarely get to take a vacation so when the beginning of July was fast approaching we decided it was now or never! We hit the road and headed to Virginia Beach. His family has a camper right on the sound in Sandbridge and own a great fishing boat. We headed to Rudy inlet to set out for a day of deep sea fishing.
After a few hours out on the ocean with little luck catching anything we decided to head back to the inlet in hopes of better fishing. As we floated around Jake’s dad asked him where he wanted to stop and weigh anchor. Jake walked over to me with a fishing pole all baited and asked if I wanted to fish for a little while. I took the pole and cast out and less than a minute later I see Jake walking over towards me with a fishing net. He then asked if I could get the contents of the net out for him.
I immediately saw a wine bottle with a white scroll of paper inside. My heart stopped and my mind began to race. After nearly 7 years together was this the moment I had been waiting for? I reached into the net holding back tears and in the bottle held the message “Kieran Taylor Donelson will you marry me?”. I looked up from reading and Jake had got down on one knee and was holding the most stunning ring and asking me to marry him!
