How We Met
We met in high school; he was a senior and I was a sophomore. Actually, I remember being a freshman and first seeing him across the school lot and taking a picture of him on the sly because I thought he was cute (which he still laughs at to this day. We officially met through a friend. Our love of anime and alternative rock music created a bond. We became attached to the hip…best friends for life. Going to his prom, late night phone calls, and slumber parties was an unspoken routine. We would stay on the phone from Friday night to Sunday evening, back when minutes were free. As time went on feelings soon developed, however, I was too afraid to risk our friendship in case it wasn’t meant to be.
We ended up losing touch for a year (till this day we don’t know why). But we got back in touch, and the person who I am grateful to for that is his grandmother who sadly passed away shortly after. Through that experience, our bond was stronger than ever, and my feelings for him grew; especially with the care and understanding, he gave to my increasing anxiety. He was my anchor…my true prince charming. One day I couldn’t hold back and I shared my feelings, and he felt the same which brings us to 8 years today!
how they asked
Our anniversary is was coming up March 16th. I knew he had the ring! I was so excited because I knew it would be our night. I wore a dress and heels, he had a new haircut and outfit for the occasion! We went to the cheesecake factory, and the whole time I wondered when it would happen. Dinner was coming to an end and I realized we were only having dinner. I was truly discouraged as I have been waiting for that moment. I tried to keep a brave face but I couldn’t. He asked tried his best to cheer me up the next morning and asked if I wanted to talk about it. I didn’t think I should so I told him everything was fine.
We had one of our best friends party later that evening, and I got ready with a heavy heart. I was not sure I wanted to go, but I did anyway. As I walked into the restaurant and went to the back I saw his best friends there, but before I could blink my friend spun me around and there he was, smiling. He said “Yesterday went exactly as I intended, and I am here today to ask you…Tamarra will you take my last name?”
So shocked but so happy I said yes!. He had my parents and our closest friends. It was more than I could hope for. it showed me how well he knew me. Even my mother lovingly teased me about how I thought things would go.
