How We Met
We met in college. Nick was a freshman and I was a Junior. I was asked to play dodgeball for an intervarsity team with one of my friends. She was an Orientation Leader for the freshman class so that’s how she ended up on a team with all freshmen. All I remember is Nick throwing the ball so hard he hurt his arm and I jokingly tried to massage the pain out on the court. For the rest of the semester, the whole team hung out pretty frequently and were all friends. Nick and I started hanging out and going on adventures together. Both recently out of long term relationships we were just friends for quite a while.
How They Asked
Almost exactly 4 years before he proposed, Nick woke me up at 5 am while we were staying at a friend’s house. We hopped in the car and drove to the local beach where he brought a blanket, goldfish, and juice boxes. I always joked and told him that my perfect date would be a picnic with goldfish and juice boxes so he did just that. After watching the sunrise and dolphins jump he took a box out of his bag and gave me a beautiful necklace. We were only friends at this time because I was about to leave for a semester abroad in Italy for 5 months and I wanted to be single. When he gave me the necklace, he told me how much I meant to him and how he was going to miss me so much while I was gone. We started dating a few months after I came back and we’ve been inseparable since.
Nick was starting his semester back at Eastern Virginia Medical School so we were moving him back in at his friend’s house and getting things settled. We talked about going to the beach to let our dog swim and taking some pictures because we never do that but as the days flew by, we never got to it. Sunday morning he woke me up at the crack of dawn and I was not happy. He asked me to straighten my hair so he could take some cute pictures of me while our dog played. I was so grumpy I almost didn’t but thankfully I did. As we were walking and playing on the beach, our dog saw a man with a large black object on his shoulder and froze like a deer in headlights. This was the camera guy Nick asked to capture the moment. Since our dog called attention to the camera, Nick knew he had to act quickly. He turned around and got on his knee and asked me to be his wife. It was the perfect moment and although I was a little skeptical when seeing the cameraman and because he was on his phone a little more than usual, I was so shocked and happy.
I can’t wait to spend my life with this amazing man.
We hung around and got some additional photos taken for fun!
