How We Met
We first met in 2010, nine years ago, during a one-week training for a college internship in finance. We went to different schools so we didn’t see each other again after that. But! We had become friends on Facebook.
We both went on to live our lives, doing cool and interesting things. In 2016 I left to travel the world for over a year. It was an amazing experience that I shared on social media. It caught Danny’s attention and reignited his interest. Upon my return to the States, Danny reached out and asked me to brunch, wanting to hear about my trip. I agreed but what he didn’t know was that I had decided to move to Australia and pursue a career in Animal Conservation. I even started filling out the Working-Visa application!!
However, that brunch was the beginning of something special. We had so much in common, including a love of the outdoors, that we agreed to see each other again. From there, the fireworks continued to ignite. We had a series of intense dates where, over long discussions, we learned how similar we were aligned in life.
As the weeks and months went on, that visa application was left unfinished. We both knew we had something ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ special.
The major turning point was when I invited him to go on a trip with me. There was a fundraising 5k Run in LA for an elephant orphanage I had visited in Kenya, The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Travel has a way of making or breaking a relationship and this solidified our feelings beyond a doubt. We fell madly and deeply in love.
I had been all the way around the world and never felt anything close to this. It was clear to us that I would, in fact, not move to Australia and that I could follow my Animal Conversation dreams right here at home. It was the best decision I ever made and is what has led us to this point.
How They Asked
Remember that trip to LA? It was so pivotal to our relationship (and because we love elephants!) that we signed up to do it again. Danny decided then to incorporate it into the proposal. He had been in contact with the race coordinators for the Enormous Elephant Run and told them he planned to propose to me at the event. They were thrilled and helped arrange video and photography to capture the moment.
We went the day before to pick up our race packets and they all kept the secret so well!! I had no idea! Finally, the race came! Danny was as cool as a cucumber. I was so focused on running that I didn’t even notice him text the coordinators when we neared the finish line.
Breathless and excited, we celebrated finishing the race. Then he got serious, pulled me around to face him and said, “Babe, this race marks one year since we fell in love. I want it to mark the beginning of the rest of our lives.”
Then he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him ❤️
I started crying the second he knelt down and almost gave myself whiplash nodding my head ‘yes’ as I answered him. Everyone was cheering and clapping, it was amazing and overwhelming in the best way. It perfectly captured our love for each other and our love for nature and animals. Two of the cornerstones that brought us together.
Now, as we plan our honeymoon, we are exploring ways to visit The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust together, so Danny can see what made me fall in love with it and why what they are doing is so important and special
