How We Met
Alex and I met at Gonzaga University in our freshman year – he was a rower and I played for the women’s soccer team so we were both enrolled in the same student-athlete class. I had the biggest crush on him, but it took him a bit longer to reciprocate the feelings. After 2 years he finally came to his senses, and we started dating on April 7, 2015. I had no idea that just 5 years later he would propose to me on that very day!
How They Asked
On April 7, 2020 – our 5 year anniversary – we were both working from home due to the Washington state stay-at-home order. I had a feeling 2020 was our year and that we would be engaged at some point, but I thought coronavirus had delayed it so I never expected him to propose that night.
He was super nonchalant and recommended we have a picnic dinner on Chuckanut Drive. This happens to be the same place he took me the night my dad passed away, so it’s my favorite, most special place in Bellingham. We picked up some burgers and headed over to Chuckanut Drive where we parked to hike down to find our spot. IT WAS THE MOST PERFECT SPOT!
We had panoramic views of Chuckanut Bay, the San Juan Islands, and the mountains. We ate, popped some champagne, and talked about our future together. At some point, Alex got up to set his phone up for a picture, at least that’s what I thought I was doing (yes, I’m oblivious).
When he came back, he had me stand up and that’s when he started the spiel. Next thing I know, he was getting down on one knee and opened the ring box (upside down, might I add). It was so him, and so us and it was the most perfect night.
