[Video] Surprise Proposal in Dallas
How we met: Ryan and I are high school sweethearts. We met when we were 16 years old, and officially started dating on my 17th birthday back in 2005. We grew up in the same hometown of Edmond, Oklahoma and ended up crossing paths through mutual friends. It didn’t take long for us both to realize that we were meant for each other, and here we are 9 years later, taking this huge step in our lives and in our relationship! Although we’ve been together for a long time, we aren’t the same people we were all those years ago.. or even just a couple of years ago. Ryan and I have grown up together, rather than grown apart. We have supplied each other with the faith, trust, and encouragement needed to seek out our own career paths, be ambitious, and have personal successes in life – all while maintaining a loving bond that has kept us together. I haven’t spent a single day in the last 9 years of my life that Ryan hasn’t made me laugh and put a HUGE smile on my face. Above all else, he has taught me that each and every day is new and exciting, and to not take myself too seriously. I can’t wait to spend the rest of forever with you, Ry!
how they asked: Ryan and I had planned a fairly last minute vacation around Labor Day weekend to Playa Mujeres, Mexico. I won’t say I was “expecting” a proposal in Mexico – but I can certainly admit that I had my fingers crossed! The weekend before our trip, one of my Oklahoma girls decided to come down for a visit and have a “girls day” on Saturday. I felt somewhat guilty because Ryan had recently come home from working in Alaska, but he assured me that he could keep himself busy for a few hours, and that I should go enjoy a day with the girls (little did I know this was all part of his plan). Marie and I went to get our nails done, and then met Blair and Haley in Uptown where we got our makeup done at Mac, and hair done at the DryBar. Ryan and I met up for dinner at Perry’s and had an amazing steak dinner, with plans to meet back up with the girls afterwards. As soon as we were finished eating I called Marie and she suggested we go to the Omni Sports Bar downtown. Ryan and I love the Omni hotel and have been there several times, so I didn’t think anything out of the ordinary. As soon as we walked into the lobby, he suggested we go upstairs to the pool area. I thought this was a little strange, because the pool might have already been closed. We saw people walking out of the doors when we got upstairs though so I figured they must still be open even though it was dark outside. When we turned the corner outside, I felt as if everyone was looking at us. I think I even said out loud “I feel like everyone is staring”. All of a sudden I noticed an aisle setup on the pool deck lit with Luminati candle bags.
I saw my mom, Donna, and Ryan’s mom, Kristi, standing off to the side and immediately started freaking out because I realized what was about to happen! That’s when Ryan got down on one knee and asked me to marry him with the beautiful Dallas skyline in the background, and the two most important ladies in our lives watching!
After I had somewhat calmed down from freaking out and flailing my arms all over the place (which took a while), Ryan told me there was a room downstairs with a few people waiting for us. We walked into the back of the Sports Bar downstairs where there was a room of 25 friends and family members waiting to surprise me! Ryan told me afterwards that part of his timing had to do with our Mexico trip – and that he knew I might be expecting it, so he wanted to completely catch me off guard. Needless to say, I was SO surprised! Thank you so much to all of our friends and family who were involved with the planning, execution, and celebration of our special night. It was so much more than anything I could’ve ever dreamed would happen to me one day. I also want to make a HUGE shout out to our videographer, Andie, who made it possible for us to relive that moment over and over for the rest of our lives!
