How We Met
I like to think I was swimming with sharks or breaking the land speed record when I first met Rachel. Probably because it provides an explanation for the weightless-ness of it all. Truth is, we we’re only stealing glances in college at first. Glances led to words and words led to dates. Pretty soon we were zooming much faster than 1227.985 kilometers per hour, and land speed was only the first of many records we were breaking.

Rachel is larger than life. If you meet her you’ll know what I mean. Yes, when she walks into a room she steals everyone’s attention. But it’s when she opens her mouth that everyone goes silent, listening intently to the wise or witty words that follow. When you have that kind of gift, it’s difficult to find places where you feel small.
For Rachel, she’s found her small-ness in the ocean, and the beach has become her solace.
So I though, what better of a place to propose than the beach my parents walked in their early years as sweethearts?
As Rachel’s brother-in-law and sister snuck photos of the whole affair, there was a tangible joy in the overcast sky and rolling waves.
I think it had to do with the small-ness of ourselves and the enormity of the commitment we’d made.
