It was the weekend before I moved to Atlanta (I had been living in Brooklyn for the past year, and he was in Atlanta (God bless long distance relationships, am I right…?). I was home visiting my family, and he decided to come down to help me move my stuff up. He told me he wanted to take me on a date Friday night, so we got all dressed up and headed to Jekyll Island for an evening of beach walks and good food. He said he also wanted to take some cool pics on this awesome beach on Jekyll that was covered in driftwood.
So on the night of, we started walking on the beach, and we were passing tons of pretty driftwood. I asked him if he wanted to stop and take those pictures so we could go to dinner before the sun set, but he told me he was looking for a specific vertical standing tree.
I spotted one in the distance, pointed to it and told him there was one a little ways away! As we got closer, that’s when I saw it – something was hanging on the tree. The swing (that’s normally at my house) that my grandparents and my parents got engaged on was hanging on the tree, covered in lights and flowers.
Apparently he woke up at 5 am and drove over that morning with my parents and brother and hung it up before I woke up! I mean come on!!! At this point I LOST IT. I am now (not cute) bawling.
He took my hand and walked me to the swing, sat me down, and pulled a note out of his pocket.
He began to read to me the sweetest letter (that I had to reread later because I heard nothing at the time). He stood up, pulled a ring box out of his pocket, got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him.
We are both crying at this point, of course I say yes, and then one of our best friends/most talented photographer pops out of the bushes.
She snaps some last photos and runs off to give us some processing time. We walk back to the car, and he pulls out a blindfold. He tells me he has one last surprise. He turns on our song in the car and starts to drive.
After what felt like forever, he gets me out of the car and guides me into this room (later to find out it’s a beach house he’s booked for the entire weekend), takes off my blindfold, and i’m surrounded by all of our family and friends. (PTL for Fr1acetime) Friends and family from New York, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, literally all over. We ate dinner and celebrated all night!
Our families hugged us goodbye, and then our friends stayed at the beach house for the weekend.
