Stephanie and Said

How We Met

Said and I met through a mutual friend from high school, back in mid-2012 while we were both undergraduates in University. We had a ton of friends in common, and even went to the same middle school – but did not overlap there because he was a year older and I moved to the States from Canada during the 8th grade.

Our families even lived less than 5 minutes apart from each other for the entire 5 years before we started University. At the time we met, we were (and are) going to different schools, but pushed through and have maintained an amazing long distance relationship over the last four years!

Over the years, we have bonded over some mutual loves (like classic rock and Judd Apatow movies), but our very clear differences have also played a role in bringing us closer (think: him as a lover of Batman and comics, and myself a full blown makeup junkie and DIYer).

how they asked

We had actually planned a trip to St. Augustine, a place sentimental to our relationship from the very beginning, but it just so happened to fall during a terrible hurricane weekend, and St. Augustine was shut off from the rest of civilization for a few days.

Instead, we ended up going to Devil’s Millhopper (pretty cool state park!) with 200+ steps down into the “Devil’s Den”. We had gone there right at the beginning of our relationship, and carved our “date” into the wood at the bottom of Devil’s Den. After walking down all 200 wooden steps, we were in the (semi) secluded area we had been years before where our date was carved.

We sat on the only bench and Said began to tell me all the wonderful things he loved about me, and that he wanted to spend the rest of our lives together. Then out of nowhere, he began to play Journey’s “Faithfully” (yes, this actually happened, and YES, it was super embarrassing!) which was “our song” and he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. Of course I said yes! Today, we are on to year 5 of this amazing relationship and friendship!

Celebrating my birthday on Halloween, a couple weeks after!
