How We Met
I was diagnosed with Stage IV Breast Cancer at the age of 27 in January 2016. My world was completely turned upside down. Luckily, I was blessed with an amazing support system to help me get through it. To my surprise, Eric, a guy I went to high school with, reached out to me when I was diagnosed to show his support. He continued to check in on me periodically to see how I was doing. When I got through the majority of my chemotherapy treatments, he asked to meet over coffee and catch up.
We weren’t really friends in high school, rather acquaintances, so I found it very special he was so concerned. When we got together, we talked for over three hours. I learned that he and his family had a history with cancer… his grandma and mom both had breast cancer and he decided he wanted to make a difference in the field and thus pursued a career as an oncology nurse and also became the President of the Wisconsin Breast Cancef Coalition.
We immediately clicked in a way that felt unique and different. Not only did he understand this different aspect of life, but we found we had a chemistry that was very natural. I remember leaving and calling my best friend and saying, “He is such a kind and caring man and he said everything I’ve always wanted to hear a guy say.” But in the moment that felt crazy to me… I wasn’t even thinking about a relationship with everything I was going through. So we develop a strong friendship that eventually ended up evolving into more. I truly feel like it was meant to be.
how they asked
Eric told me we were going to have a date night on August 12, 2017. We got ready and headed to Cafe Benelux in Milwaukee. We sat on their rooftop, watched the sun set and had dinner, drinks and dessert – our speciality! Then as we were leaving, he told me he had a surprise for me. He took my hand and led me into a room where our dear and closest family and friends were. I was completely surprised and at that moment, I knew this was going to be one of the most special moments of my life.
As I scanned the room, tears came to my eyes as I saw our parents, siblings (he flew my brother in from Minneapolis!) close family members and my best girl friends. He said we wouldn’t be the people we are without all the love and support from everyone in the room and although we met again under odd circumstances, it led us to one another. He then got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I said yes! Yes to a lifetime of friendship, partnership and forever love. We had a champagne toast and celebrated the rest of the night with our loved ones. I couldn’t have asked for anything more perfect.
