How We Met
Andrew and I were a wild card setup, we honestly could not have been more opposite or seemed more wrong for each other. But when I needed a date for my sorority invite, a mutual friend of ours let me know that Andrew had shown interest in me before; so I said “Sure, why not?”
He loved math, business and parties while I swooned over literature, art, and movie nights. I was a vegetarian and he was an In N Out fanatic…needless to say we bumped heads a bit. But when we finally arrived at the Luau themed party at Gladstone’s in Malibu, we realized we shared a deep passion for the ocean (we both grew up in beach cities) and after that things slowly began to click between us. Before I knew it, we were standing on the deck of the restaurant overlooking the water and I actually initiated our first kiss and despite the fact that Andrew was graduating from USC in 2 weeks while I still had a year and a half left of school, we’ve been together ever since.
how they asked
It was a very chilly Saturday night in January when Andrew spontaneously prompted, ” We’re going out! I have a surprise for you!” He didn’t let me ask a single question before scooting me off into our room so I could change into a nice dress. He was dead silent most of the car ride and I felt myself getting inexplicably nervous about the surprise. When we finally pulled up to Gladstones in Malibu, where we had our first date, I was instantly swept off my feet by the romantic gesture.
After an amazing meal of reminiscing and laughing about when we first started dating Andrew said he had something to show me, “Do you want to go walk on the beach with me?” His voice was shaky and he seemed odd again, “No babe…it’s too cold!” I said unknowingly tampering with the plan. Finally he simply grabbed my hand and said “No no…we need to walk on the beach.”
And so we did.
He held me tight so I could be warm and he thanked me for being a good partner, girlfriend, and best friend. I could feel my heart start to race and I wasn’t sure why. Then we stopped right beneath the deck where we had our first kiss and Andrew grabbed both my hands and said, “Stephanie Rose Sorady…” and I screamed like a madwoman as he got down on one knee in the sand and took out a beautiful little box, “Make me the happiest man alive…will you marry me?” I started sobbing tears of joy at the sight of this incredible man asking me such a beautiful question; and somehow blubbered out a “YES!”
We hugged, we kissed, we screamed, we cried, all before we realized he hadn’t shown me the ring yet! We were cracking up as he got back down one knee and put the most beautiful three-stone ring on my finger. Then Andrew told me to look to my left and suddenly there was everyone in the restaurant standing on the deck cheering and taking pictures!
Andrew later told me that not everything he wanted went as planned, which I think makes the proposal even more fit for us. Our story hasn’t always been perfect but we’ve always managed to make things work and fill our lives with sincere romance and love.
