How We Met
Our story is a long and crazy one. It starts about 13 years ago sitting in Sophomore year biology. It was the first day of school and I find my way to my assigned seat. I look to my right and sitting next to me is the “bad boy” of our grade Matt. I joke now, but I had a slight fear of him and may have scooted my seat a bit to the left as to avoid any contact! As the school year went on slowly we began to interact and speak and I realized this “bad boy” was funny and not so “bad” after all! A friendship slowly began and over the next 2 years we would sit at lunch together and chat on the way to class. End of senior year rolls around and Matt and his longtime girlfriend broke up. We had one last summer home before we went off to college. Matt asked me to hang out with him so we went to cheesecake factory and wound up sitting and talking for about 5 hours.
From there it was solidified we would hang out all summer. Soon that “in school, only” friendship became the best friendship. We were going to different schools for college, I would be in NY and he would be in MD, but the distance only made our friendship stronger. Fast forward to March of 2010…there had always been something more than a friendship there, but I was fearful it would ruin what we had if we acted on it. March 18th, 2010 changed that, we took the first step in our relationship and had our first Kiss. Matt went back to MD after that and I worried that everything was over. But sure enough, it was only the beginning. Two months later we were both back home in NJ and on May 18, 2010, Matt officially asked me to be his girlfriend.
how they asked
It was May 19th, 2018, a day I had long awaited for unknowingly. We decided since Matt had to work on our actual anniversary we would celebrate the next day. So as he does every year he planned out our Anniversary Date night. This year we went to a new restaurant near one of our favorite locations in Point Pleasant NJ. We had a wonderful dinner and talked about how far we’ve come in the last 8 years. The night was rainy and chilly, but we were determined to do our favorite walk down the boardwalk to where it ends and meets the inlet. Back when Matt and I were just friends and throughout our relationship, we would take this walk and I would always tell him this is my happy place, this exact spot.
As we are walking toward that same spot we have walked 1000 times before we joked and laughed, there was nothing else that mattered at that moment but us. As we approached the end, I saw 2 people were standing there and I instantly recognized them as our best friends (The other Matt and Staci)! The tears came instantly as I now knew what was coming next. After hugging our friends, they spun me around to my future husband down on one knee and the most beautiful ring I had ever seen! It was perfect, it was us, and it was everything I had ever dreamed about. Our journey has been a long one, but it’s only just getting started.
