How We Met
It all started back my freshman year of college. It was the first week of school and I remember my best friend calling me and telling me that she just met the cutest guy ever.
“Sar, there’s this guy who lives in my dorm and he looks just like Liam Hemsworth…you would die. He plays football…he’s a Christian…and I think his name is even Christian.”
“Ah, that’s awesome. He sounds perfect. You should go for em’…” I remember encouragin’ her.
Week after week, every time she would run into him she would immediately text me about their brief yet epic encounters.
Fast forward a few months.
One day, out of the blue, I get a friend request on Facebook.
Oh my gosh. You have got to be kidding me.
Immediately, I call my best friend laughing, “Dude, you’ll never believe who just friend requested me…CHRISTIAN TOBER.”
What the heck. Why the heck would he friend request ME? I’m in Texas. He’s in California. We have never even met.
(Later, I came to find out that Christian had seen a picture that my best friend had posted of us for my birthday on Facebook, which prompted his oh so bold friend request.)
Every since that day, whenever I posted something on Facebook or Instagram, within minutes I would get a “like” from the one and only Christian Tober. Hahahaha.
Yeah, this whole “liking” thing lowkey went on for almost two years.
Until one day, I received this unexpected message on Facebook.
And ever since that day, something incredible happened.
To my disbelief, we kept talking. Like really talking. And you know what?
We never stopped.
It did not take long for our novel length Facebook messages to turn into emoji filled texts, late night phone calls, spontaneous “just becuase” flowers and one nervewreckin’ Facetime date.
(Later, I came to find out that after seeing/meeting Christian for the first time on FaceTime, Christian immediately called his brother and said, “I know this is crazy…and you can’t stand up at my wedding someday and say this… but I’m going to marry that girl.”)
That summer, we talked everyday. Things were great. More than great. The only problem was he was in California at football camp and I was interning for the summer in Fort Worth.
I had no idea when I would ever be able to meet this guy. He was there. I was here… I just simply did not see how it was ever going to work…
Until one day. July 23. Everything changed.
That week, my roommate told me that her sister was flying in Weds. to come celebrate her birthday weekend with us. She asked if I would go to the airport with her to pick her sister up.
“Of course! I’d love to go with ya.” I said, as I hopped into her car with her birthday card in hand.
When we got to the airport, I was on my phone texting Christian. That morning he had told me he was driving out to his best friend’s lake house that was about four and a half hours away. He was just texting me to say they had finally made it! And to make me jealous, he started sending me pictures of the lake, the dreamy wake boarding boat & a precious little pup floatin’ on a tube.
“What the heck. I wanna be at the lake house right now…,” I quietly pouted in my mind. So not fair.
Meanwhile, we continued to patiently wait for my roommate’s sister to walk through that terminal door and into the baggage claim… Minutes go by. I look up from my phone. Don’t see her. Put my head back down. Then, all of a sudden, I look up and to my complete surprise, I see Christian walking straight toward me.
“Oh my god. Oh my god.”
Never in my life have I been more surprised. I couldn’t think. Everything in my body went numb — except for my hands…yeah, those started to shake a bit.
“Oh my god. You’re here!!! What? How? Destiny, you knew?! You all knew?!”
To this day, that might forever be one of the greatest moments of my life. That day changed everything. And there really just are no words for moments like that.
Honestly, I really did not think moments like that actually existed. That kind of thing just does not happen. Not for people like me anyway… Man, y’all. It was unreal. It was amazing. It was definitely the surprise of a lifetime.
And yeah, so that’s how we met. In the Dallas Airport baggage claim…
And that weekend, he stayed for four days. We had the best weekend ever. And on his last night, before he flew back to California, he asked me to be his girlfriend. I said YES! From there we survived and somehow kinda thrived doin’ 2 years of long distance. And yeah, so that’s the crazy story of us and the rest is history!
how they asked
About a week ago, Christian asked if I wanted to go on a double date with his brother, Will, and his wife, Kaylin. “Of coursssssseee. I’m down.” I told em’. So we hit up our local favorite place, Hapa J’s, where our good friend Kurt works.
Kurt hooked us up with some Mai Tais and yummy Hawaiian food, and we had a grand ol’ time. Pretty standard Saturday night for us. After dinner, Will asked if we wanted to head down to the beach to watch the sunset. Completely oblivious as to what was about to go down, I agreed.
“Of coursssssseee. I’m down,” I replied in typical “me” fashion.
So, the four of us started making our way down to the beach.
As we got closer, I see all these sparklers start goin’ off on the beach and some people taking off running.
“OH MY GOSH CHRISTIAN! SOMEONE IS GETTING ENGAGED RIGHT NOW!!!!” Christian says nothing. He grabs my hand a little tighter and keeps walking us through the tunnel.
“CHRISTIAN!!! AH! THIS IS SO EXCITING WE GET TO WATCH THEIR BIG MOMENT!!”
For a split second, my heart stops and immediately my head jumps to the thought…Woah. What if I am the one getting engaged right now?
I turn my head to the right and I see a crowd of blurry people. I squint extra hard to try to make out any familiar face. Nahhh. Don’t know any of em’. They’re all strangers…It can’t be ME who’s getting engaged…Hahaha whew!
Christian grips my hand a little tighter and keeps walking us toward the sparklers.
“Wait a second…What’s going on? Christian? Is this for us?!?!….Oh my gosh this is for us! We are the one’s getting engaged!”
Christian pulled me in close.
My mind went completely blank.
Wow this is happening. This is really happening.
In that moment, I feel like my body went into this surreal blackout kinda state… where everything started blurring in and out of focus, almost cinematically.
As he pulls me in tight, he starts whispering all these incredibly sweet things in my ear.
Unfortunately, I don’t think I registered a single word because I was in complete shock. Sorrrrrrry! (I actually made him propose to me again later on that night so I could really hear and take in what he intended to tell me. Hahaha.)
After his heartfelt speech, he dropped down to one knee.
That is when things started shifting in and out of focus.
In that moment Christian got all blurry and out of focus and the crowd behind him shifted into focus. Immediately, I saw the faces of all our friends and family. Somehow, Christian had pulled off getting my Mom & Dad, my hometown besties from Chicago & my college besties from TCU to fly out and make it for this big moment. When I saw the whole crowd, I screamed. I was in so much shock that I did not even hear Christian asking me to marry him the first time…so he had to ask again. Immediately, Christian shifted back in to focus, and this time I heard every single word.
“Sara, will you marry me?”
OH MY GOD! ARE YOU SERIOUS? YESSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!
Seconds later, all our friends and family came rushin’ our on the beach and we got to tackle them all with the most humungous hugs of all time.
I swear, on July 2nd, heaven touched down on earth. And I will forever stand by that. I have never experienced anything like it before. There was so much love all up on that beach. God’s love has never felt so real or tangible.
As the sun set, we all huddled up on the beach to say a prayer and thank God for all of it.
After, we toasted up some champagne, shared some laughs and celebrated all night long till the bonfire burnt out.
The day will forever go down in history as one of the greatest moments of our life.
