How We Met
Kevin and I met about three years ago at a special retreat called “Tres Dias” held by Grace Korean Church. He was serving as I attended the retreat for the first time. Although I was not attending this church at the time, I decided to sign myself up because I had heard so many amazing stories about the retreat. (Definitely turned out to be amazing, because that’s where I met the love of my life!) Kevin and I barely exchanged a few words at the retreat, but soon after, he started messaging me on Facebook. This didn’t last very long because it was mostly about random things and I thought he was a total weirdo for messaging me out of the blue.
We saw each other here and there at Biola University, where I was finishing up my last semester of undergrad and he was attending Talbot School of Theology. I also knew of him as the High School Pastor at Grace Korean Church, but I had no interest in him whatsoever.
A few months later, I decided to commit to Grace Korean Church and started serving in the high school ministry shortly after. And from then, the rest is history!
how they asked
From months in advance, Kevin announced April 21st as the day for our high school Leaders Appreciation. I had no suspicion whatsoever because this was a usual occurrence- but little did I know, this whole “fake” event was a set up for me to dress formally for the surprise of my life! He picked me up from home to attend this event in our church garden. Right when we arrived, I was absolutely stunned by the beautiful setup. From the centerpieces to the stage backdrop, It was as if my whole Pinterest board came to life right before my eyes. The schedule went as expected, starting with worship, prayer, and the students encouraging the leaders. After each encouragement, they would hand out nicely wrapped gifts to the leaders, which I later found out were empty boxes!
When it was my students’ turn to read their letter to me, they handed me a gift that was larger than everyone else’s. Then I was brought to the front stage as everyone chanted, “Open it! Open it!” I was stunned as I unwrapped a Beauty and the Beast themed storybook of my relationship with Kevin. He scripted our story and my students had filled every page with illustrations ranging from vibrant to dramatic colors to portray the theme. What was most touching was that each page was artistically created by a different student- and every unique page came together to create a beautiful masterpiece.
As one of my students was reading the story to me on the mic (while I was crying hysterically throughout), the story was reaching its finale. The beast descended from Heaven while dramatically transforming into a handsome prince because of the princess’s love for him. He was so certain the princess was the love of his life that he came to get on one knee… Then I turned around to see Kevin on his knee as he asked me to marry him with the sweetest smile on his face! Although I had planned on trolling him to say, “No!” just like how I had told him I would never marry him when he first told me he had feelings for me- my mind went blank as all I could do was cry in his arms and say yes with all of my heart.
This was the most touching event of my life. Kevin exceeded my expectations to create such a successful and epic proposal for me. I was showered with so much love, not only from him but also from our loving community including our high school students. A few days have passed since the proposal, but I still catch myself smiling as I think back to this beautiful day I will never forget for the rest of my life. Thank you to everyone who made this day so special for the both of us- and All Glory to God!
