How We Met
Justin and I actually went to high school together. We didn’t know each other well, but we did have a lot of mutual friends. We reconnected 5 years later after my best friend, Jasmine, and his good friend, Donny, started dating. Jasmine invited me to go to our local Taste of the Town event (which is a food, beer, and wine festival to literally taste what our town has to offer from local restaurants and wineries) with her and her boyfriend. I was under the impression that I was going to be the third wheel to them all day, but when we showed up at Donny’s house to pick him up, Justin was there! I, of course, recognized him from high school and immediately hugged him, excited to not have to be left alone all day! We ended up having an amazing time at the event. We bonded over the fact that we weren’t really wine drinkers (but looove beer!) and our favorite TV show (How I Met Your Mother).
We immediately connected and starting texting everyday, finding any way to hang out with each other. It wasn’t the best timing because Justin was about to leave for Vans Warped Tour in a couple weeks to tour the USA for a band that he did all the artwork and merchandise for (he’s a graphic designer). Despite our amazing connection and how much we cared about each other, we knew it wouldn’t be the greatest idea to jump into a relationship before he left for two months, so we decided to hold off until he got back. That didn’t stop us from texting and talking on the phone nonstop and missing each other like crazy. While he was gone, I would ask him to “tell me a story” and he would come up with silly fairy tales- reimagining us as all of my favorites things: aliens, elephants, bumble bees and books. The second he got back (he even left a couple weeks early because we missed each other so much– oops!) we made our relationship official and the rest is history!
how they asked
Our two year anniversary was coming up and I’m not going to lie- I had a feeling a proposal was going to happen. We had planned a weekend getaway to Malibu to have dinner at our favorite restaurant, Moonshadows, so I thought that it was a possibility that’s where it would happen! I was getting so excited. I went to Free People that week and found an amazing outfit that I fell head over heels for (but sadly decided I couldn’t afford) and got a manicure, thinking I was getting prepared. On the day before our anniversary, I came home from work and found the outfit from Free People hanging up in our room.
We had planned to go out to dinner with his parents that night at a local restaurant and he casually mentioned that maybe we should invite my parents as well. I was getting a little suspicious, but didn’t think much of it. He told me I should wear the outfit because it just happened to match the nail color the I had picked! Our plan was to get to the restaurant a little early because “his mom had to work and we should get there early to save a table.” Before we got in the car to leave, he grabbed a present for me that he said he would give to me once we got to the restaurant. I was so confused; it was a day early, our anniversary wasn’t until tomorrow.
We got to the restaurant and luckily had the whole patio to ourselves. We sat down together and Justin finally let me open open up the present. It was a book titled “Our Never-ending Fairy Tales.”
In it he had comprised all our the stories and fairy tales he had texted me while he was touring, before we had officially started dating.
He had not only added all of the stories that he wrote for me, but had also added the illustrations to all of them! Us as aliens, elephants, bees.
It was absolutely beautiful. He added pictures of us together, throughout our whole relationship.
On the very last page of the book he had written out in beautiful calligraphy “Will you marry me?”
My jaw dropped. He turned towards me and told me, “You’re my best friend. I love you so much.” And then he asked me to marry him!
Of course, I said yes. I have never wanted anything more in my life and I could not be any happier.
I accepted the ring and moments later my family walked in, then his family, and then my best friend, Jasmine, and her boyfriend who were the ones who brought us together. They all told me that they had known all along and were so excited for us. We stayed at the restaurant for hours, talking excitedly about future wedding plans and eating an absolutely delicious dinner.
We could not be happier to share the rest of our lives together! He is the most thoughtful, hard-working, loyal man I’ve ever met and I am so excited to become his wife!
