Simone and Wendell
How We Met
Wendell (also known as DJ to everybody, including his mother) and I met on campus at the University of Maryland, College Park in 2011. I was an incoming freshman to the University and he was my orientation adviser, a sophomore at the time. I remember the first time I saw him and what he was wearing and how cute I thought he was. Orientation is only two days but I knew at the end of it, I had to find some way to keep in contact. Lucky for me, he gave out his orientation “business” card at the end. I immediately went home and couldn’t wait to tell my girlfriends about him and how I would plot to make him notice me once school started.
Turns out, I didn’t really need to do much. He remembered me from orientation and on the first or second day of school offered to help me move in. We communicated briefly back and forth through twitter where we exchanged numbers and it was pretty much history after that. We started dating on December 28th, 2011. I can’t believe I am now preparing to marry my college sweetheart!
how they asked
We love to travel so, on a vacation to Italy, specifically visiting Positano, Italy, DJ said we had dinner reservations at a fancy restaurant one night. We had been hanging out on the beach all day and went back to the Airbnb to prepare for dinner. This was not unusual at all since we were on vacation, we needed to eat. Once we were both ready, we stepped out to walk to the restaurant we had “reservations” at 6:30 pm. We were early, so DJ decided we do some window shopping for his mom. I still didn’t think this was out of the ordinary.
Finally, close to 6:30 we began to walk to the restaurant which was right past the beach. On our way over, he stopped and asked me if we could take a picture on the sand to view the sunset. I thought this was strange because we were on the beach all day and the last thing I wanted to do was get sand in my shoes before dinner. I told him no, I didn’t want to take a picture on the sand. He handed his phone over to a couple to take a picture for us anyway and I pretty much blacked out after that!
The random couple was not random at all! They were professional photographers ready to capture one of the most important moments of my life! DJ started off by saying how much he loved me, and I was truly just in shock and trying to take everything in. We are absolutely a couple of jokesters as a couple, so it is possible he could have been joking. Also, he is very big into surprises and worked very hard to ensure I didn’t have a clue to what was happening.
I still couldn’t believe that he chose me forever! I kept asking “are you sure”? “really?” “for me”? and when I saw the ring, I knew this was real. After 6 years together, you’d think I’d suspect something, nope. I am so excited and so ready to spend the rest of my life with the love of my life, who, I thank God every day, is also one of my best friends. There were no dinner reservations!
