How We Met
Jay and I went to college and medical school together at George Washington University. We were always in the same group of friends, but were always just that: friends. After medical school in 2012, I went to New York for my residency and Jay went to Southern California for his. I honestly thought I would never see him again, let alone date each other. Four years went by after graduating, during which we pursued our careers and had our share of unsuccessful relationships. In Spring 2016, our paths crossed as we were both in Chicago at the same time, him for a conference and me for required classes for my medical license. I met with him and his friends at the famous Signature Room.
I don’t know what it was, but seeing him felt different this time than the past 11 years that we had known each other. By the time Fall came around, we were talking almost everyday. He went to Peru for a medical service trip and we both realized, independently, that we had fallen for the other. In October we went to Austin with our friends and told each other how strongly we felt. I never imagined he felt the same way about me that I did about him. At this time, he was still living in California and I was still on the East Coast. The long distance was less than ideal, but our feelings were too strong for us to walk away. For the first time ever, we were boyfriend and girlfriend. Even though we only saw each other every 3-4 weeks, I was the happiest I have ever been with Jay as my partner.
how they asked
This past April, we went on our first trip together to Bermuda. As huge beach bums, we could not have decided on a better destination for our first vacation as a couple. One evening during our trip, Jay had told me not to make any plans for dinner. We started walking to the beach, the sun starting to set in the background and my stilettos sinking into the sand with each step. I had no idea where he was taking me! As we turned the cliff, I saw a line of tiki torches leading to a table set up with flowers, dinner and champagne.
It was so romantic!
We started eating and sipping on our champagne, and Jay started telling me about how he felt about me.
In the middle of his story, he asked me to stand up and continued speaking while holding my hands.
What exactly he said next was a blur, because the next thing I knew, he got down on one knee and asked me to spend forever with him. I said yes, a million times yes!, as he put the most gorgeous ring on my finger. Frankly, I was stunned because we had even gone ring shopping before we left for our trip! Of course I learned later that it was all a decoy so I wouldn’t expect anything.
I am so excited to marry the man of my dreams! “..because in a hundred lifetimes, in a hundred worlds, in any version of realty, I’d find you and I’d choose you.”
