How We Met
When I was 18 years old, I fell head over heels in love with a boy, and man was our love was something to be jealous of. Everyone who saw us knew that we were meant for each other and we were crazy about one another. It truly was a summer filled with endless love that would forever change our hearts. But life had different plans. I had to return to college at the University of Kentucky and he stayed home in Tennessee. I thought we had every intentions of making the long distance work because we both were so madly in love, but he felt like I deserved more than what he could offer at the time. He moved to Georgia with his best friend and joined the military. To say I was heart broken is an understatement. It took me YEARS to even be able to speak his name without crying. He would check in with me from time to time just to let me know he talks to God about me daily and he would always love me, but timing was just not right for us.
Fast forward 4 years and I’ve accepted the fact that I’ll always love him, and even though I believed we were made for each other, I had to move on with my life. I had a baby and the day I delievered he called the hospital to make sure we were healthy. He congratulated me and my new family and said a blessing over us. Although it was hard to know that we were over for good, I always respected and loved the man he was.
how they asked
Fast forward another 4 years and while my daughter is gone on vacation with her father and his girlfriend and new baby, I get a message from Patrick asking me if I wanted to visit and catch up with him in Florida while my daughter was gone. Of course I was skeptical, but I hadn’t really seen him in 8 years and I had finally moved on. I thought it would be a nice break from my hectic life to go visit someone I always had fun with. He was a true gentleman the whole trip, we really didn’t talk about the past, we just enjoyed life in the moment. When I got off the plane and returned to Kentucky, I got an email from him confessing his undying love for me. Obviously I was over the moon because this is the man I have prayed for. He is everything I had been asking God for and more! On Friday, I went shopping with my best friend and out for dinner. On the way home I told Emily how much I missed Patrick and how I hated that he lived in a Florida and I am in Kentucky. When she dropped me off back home I saw a note on my door that said “It only takes 8.2 for a man to fall in love, but with you it took 2.”
I opened that door and found the next note. I screamed to the top of my lungs as I read “Nothing in my life has ever made more sense than when we are together.”
I opened that door to another note “When a man realizes he has found something incredible it becomes his job to keep it” and candles and flower petals lining a pathway to my back porch.
On that door was the final note that said “So that’s exactly what I intend to do.”
The love of my life was on my back porch ready to propose to me as my mom, brother, and sister in law were hidden in the corner. It felt like a movie.
I honestly could not have imagined a better proposal. But to top it all off, when I went to pick up Elliot from her dad on Sunday, Patrick stayed home and set the house up exactly the same and asked my daughters permission with a rose gold necklace to match my ring. This is truly a blessing from God.
