How We Met
We met in college at Delaware State University. It was our junior year. There was this one class I struggled in but Wayne was really smart in it. It was a critical thinking class. A group of us would get together and study for up coming tests. The weird thing about it was whenever the group made plans to get together, they never showed up it was always just Wayne and I. In those moments we connected. Wayne helped me pass critical thinking and a few other classes. Those days when we studied for test made me realize how sweet, polite, and genuine he was. I thought it was kind of cute but I never told him how I felt because I was unsure how I felt. I was sure he like me after we shared a kiss during our one on one study session.
After all the waiting for me after a test or class and the walking to my car I asked I finally asked him “so what are we?” I asked a bunch of questions because I needed to know what this was. I asked are we talking? I asked do you like me? I asked why do you wait for me after class and why do you walk me to my car???. His response was “I like you, but I don’t want a girlfriend. I just got out of a relationship this year and I’m just trying to focus on school”. That response hurt a little because I did think we could be something. After he told his response I left it alone and started focusing back on school. Wayne still helped me with classes, he still waited after and he still walked me to my car every day.
So I thought to my myself “if you don’t like me like that then why are you doing all of these things?”. Then I just that’s how he is. It made me think more about us being together when Wayne came to my house and help me study for another class, my pulled me to the side and said “Shelby I like this guy a lot”. I remember telling my dad that we are just friends and nothing more, because I knew Wayne just wanted to focus on school. Until one day one of his friends invited me to a get together. That night we had fun and Wayne walked me to my car. At about 2:30 in the morning November 21, 2013 Wayne said to me “I want to be with you”. I was hesitant at first but then I agreed to see where this goes”. And now over 3 years later Jan 1, 2017 He got down on one knee and proposed.
how they asked
It was New Years Eve 3 mins before the clock hit 12 and he said I will be right back. As the clock counts down I’m wondering were he is and just thinking about how he is going to miss the ball drop. Once it hit 12 everyone in front of me turned around to face me. I was confused at first and was wondering why everyone was looking at me when the stage is right there. Before I knew it he tapped me and I turned around to him on one knee asking me to marry him.
I cried and said yes.
