Shelby and James
How We Met
James and I met in high school when I was in 10th grade and he was in 11th. I had just turned 16 and he was 17. We first talked at a mutual friends bonfire and right then and there I knew he was the one I wanted. I told everyone “I want.. no need James Gilbert.” I was a spunky and outgoing girl and I took the initiative and went for what I wanted. With him something was so different, I was so outgoing yet he made me so vulnerable like I had never been before. I never cared what anyone thought, especially boys, but something was just different about him. We both agree that we knew from the very beginning at just 16 and 17 that we were in it for the long haul. We are now 23 and almost 22 years old and approaching our 6 year dating anniversary and We are happier than ever. The feeling is so impossible to explain but all I can say is just when you know, you know. It’s just like he is my other half and I literally need him to even breathe.
how they asked
I always knew a proposal and wedding was inevitable but that didn’t make it any less exciting. James started by brining my father a pack of beer and asking for his blessing and followed with bringing my mother a bouquet of flower and also asking for her blessing. My whole family went to visit my brother is Colorado. Everything was like a fairytale that I didn’t know was unfolding. My moms and I went and got mani/pedis a few days before leaving for the trip. My family had already planned to take family pictures so James saw his opportunity where he knew we would all be dressed up and together. We went to Garden of the Gods to take the family photos and as we were on top of a red rock boulder with mountains in the background James got down on one knee and proposed with all of our family watching. We both got choked up and I was just in complete shock. I told him I could feel a heart beating right before but I wasn’t sure if it was his or mine and I was slightly concerned one of us may be having a heart attack but eventually it all made sense. There is so much more I could say but I wasnted to keep it as short as possible. I just can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with my best friends and better half.
