How We Met
In April of 2016 I met Garrett when I was hired at the new Costco in Tulsa, OK. I was a full time student with 2 other jobs, he had just moved here from Wichita, KS. Our shift started at 4am.. and I am not a morning person, so the amount of time I had actually talked to Garret was very little. In May, he stopped me while I was clocking out for my break and asked “Hey Shelby, when are you going to let me take you on a date?” And I very sarcastically replied “When you actually ask me” (again.. not a morning person.. haha) Before my shift was over and I left for class he made sure to ask me on a date and of course it was a yes! Our first date was to Hop Jam, a music/beer festival in Tulsa every year. We met up with some of my friends and just enjoyed the night together. I don’t think I had laughed so much in my life before that day. I knew I’d marry him. After an 8 month break, (life happens yanno) we met up on Valentine’s Day and he had a rose for me. From then on, there wasn’t a day we didn’t see each other.
How They Asked
August 1, 2017, the day we got our first house together. Garrett had told me his parents were coming to town to help us move, they live in Washington state. I thought it was kind of weird that they’d come all this way to help us move but I just ignored it. Then they didn’t get in to Tulsa until that night, so we were done moving already!
The next day I was off work (unknown to me Garrett had called my boss to get the day off) and we spent all day downtown walking around shopping and eating at our favorite places. We ended the day at the OneOK Field for a Drillers baseball game. It was the hottest day of that summer and I was D O N E with the day. I was so ready to go home, but my whole family came out and his parents had never been to Tulsa so I stuck it out. Before the game some workers approached us and asked if we wanted to play in a game on the field to which I was SO excited to do! So it was Garrett and I.
The game comes and you have to guess a phrase based off the emojis they put together on the screen. I got all of them wrong.. Garrett was killing it!! So this one comes up that is a boy and a girl + a ring = a bride and groom, and I stared at it for what felt like 5 minutes with no clue what it was. And as I look at Garrett to see if he knew, he was down on one knee and asked me to be his wife. I screamed yes and cried and it was incredible! We walked back up the stairs from the field and all of our best friends are there!! They had been hiding from me the whole time so I wouldn’t see them!! We went back to my parents house where more family and friends were there to celebrate and make me cry some more!! I love my now husband so much and I am forever thankful for the best surprise of my life!!
