How We Met
I first met Shelby working at Kanakuk Kamps, a summer camp in Missouri. On one of our nights off I was with a friend at the local laundromat waiting for his laundry, I noticed there was a girl who had an Arkansas Pi Phi shirt on. This spiked my interest because I also went to Arkansas, and my mom was a Pi Phi there. My friend knew her, and introduced her to me that night, but it wasn’t until later that I got to have a conversation with her.
I worked up the courage the next day to pursue a conversation, and immediately knew I wanted to get to know her. The problem was she was leaving Kamp the next day and wouldn’t be back for two weeks. I managed to get her number before she left, and continued to talk to her on every day-off I had. Two weeks later, Shelby gets back to camp, and she will never let me forget this, but the first thing I said to her when she got back was a super casual “Glad you’re back” with a high five.
The following weeks I found more and more excuses to talk to her, I asked her on our first “walk” (the camp version of a date), then finally our first date. We went out to dinner in Branson, then to a round of mini golf, and it didn’t take me long to realize that I was beginning to fall in love with Shelby. I had never connected with anybody like I did with her and I have never met anybody that I have had more fun with. We continued to date back at Arkansas, and I cannot wait for her to become my wife!
how they asked
Going into the day I thought that my parents were coming into town so that we could go to a family friends vow renewal; I had no idea that Brooks had planned the absolute best surprise! My parents came by my house and picked me up, as I had no idea where we were going. But, when they turned into a beautiful Christmas Tree farm I thought that something was up, because Christmas Tree farms are my favorite. However, it wasn’t until my dad started crying and told me that this is where I was supposed to get out, that I knew it was happening.
I got out of the car and walked down a path that was lined with lanterns and trees, until I came to a small clearing with a beautiful set up. It was supposed to be a part of Brooks’ plan that he was hiding (unseen by me) behind some trees until he saw the perfect moment. But as soon I walked up I immediately noticed him peeking behind the trees, and it took everything in me not to just go straight to him! But, I realized there was another part of the plan when I noticed that sitting on a bench was a Bible with my future last name, and a journal that Brooks had kept throughout our entire relationship. I spent a few minutes reading through the journal (really trying to focus on the words and not what was happening that moment). Then, when I came to the last page, Brooks had written that today was the day, and that he couldn’t wait to ask me to be his wife – I immediately started tearing up!
That’s the moment when Brooks decided to make his formal appearance from behind the trees. He hugged me, told me he loved me said lots of other really sweet things, then got on one knee and asked me to marry him. Through tears of joy I said yes!
Afterwards, our parents surprised us with a big dinner with all of our family members- even Brooks didn’t know about it! Then the party continued because all of our closest friends were waiting for us at home to celebrate for the rest of the night! That day could not have been any better, saying YES to love of my life with all of our best friends and family being there to celebrate us!
