How We Met
As they say “There is no accidental meeting between souls”. The crossing of paths of two different people, two different souls with completely different lives is always for a reason. In our Indian culture, it is marked by the coming together of not only two individuals but of two entire families. Rupinder and I both are doctors, living on completely opposite coasts of the USA. When introduced, I was based in Los Angeles and Rupinder in New York. We came across each other, through an arranged set-up. Rupinder was the first guy I was ever arranged to meet up with, so I was very very skeptical of this whole setup.
My father and I are super close. I mean this might sound crazy- but if anyone would ask our opinion, we always have the same answers!! (sometimes my mother would test this just for just for fun, she would ask for our opinions on an outfit or any matter separately, and IT WOULD ALWAYS BE THE SAME ANSWER ). As my dad thought we would be compatible, Rupinder and I started communicating. So, one day he flew down to LA to meet me after getting to know each other for couple of weeks.
We just had one hour, the first time we met but felt like an eternity. As they say, lost in talks, in our own little world, indifferent to the rest of the world, but with ‘your’ entire universe in front of you; you literally can’t take your eyes off. This was what our first meeting was like; straight out of a fairy tale in the ‘amore’ vibes of an Italian restaurant in Beverly hills. Thus #ShawetaFoundherButtarhalf.
How They Asked
So, after a couple of meetings when we said “Yes” to our families, things literally moved at the speed of the Light!! Our parents decided to get us married literally weeks after we said yes. For our pre-engagement photoshoot, we didn’t have any time as we were getting engaged in India, followed by our wedding (we did the whole wedding preparations in literally 25 days which is a story for another time). I (Shaweta) left for India for wedding preparations while Rupinder was still working in NYC. He knew how badly I wanted to have that “High on Glam, Dreamy!!!” Pre Engagement photoshoot of New York City. As in our Culture when families are involved there is no such thing as Proposal, thus I wasn’t even expecting one to be very honest. So when I left for India, he hadn’t officially proposed to me yet at that time. But Rupinder had something else in his mind, he made me fly out of India in the middle of our wedding preparations stating it’s for our marriage certificate. Little did I know – He is going to ASK ME TO MARRY HIM!! He proposed to me by the Brooklyn Bridge, going down on one knee with candles and rose petals. It was a super ROMANTIC, perfect evening!!!! With a Gleaming smile – I SAID YESSSS!!
I am sure that I could spend the entirety of my mortal life journey on this planet with such an amazing partner!!
Followed by the Proposal, Rupinder took me to a Rooftop restaurant for Dinner, literally booked a whole section for us with unobstructed Empire State View. When things finally slowed down it finally hit me, “WHAT I AM ENGAGED?!” For the next day he had planned our Engagement Photo Shoot. And we had out official Engagement party in India with our Friends and Family.
