How We Met

My fiancé Karthik and I met over 11 years ago – February 2009 – in college (I was 18 and he was 20). He is Indian and I am Peruvian. We were in the same Sociology class. He introduced himself to my twin sister and me at a club fair day event and our friendship blossomed from there. We became extremely close and became best friends doing almost everything together. I loved how extroverted and friendly he was, amongst other things.

It was not until we went to Disney’s California Adventure in June 2009 that everything changed for us. We both realized we had feelings for each other, more than just friends. That summer was the best summer of our lives. He officially asked me to be his girlfriend in the sweetest and thoughtful way on August 18, 2009. He took me to Santa Monica beach and gave me a sand shovel so that I could start digging.

I started digging and pulled out a wine bottle with a long-stemmed red rose and the bottle was filled with Smarties candies (the first candy he had ever given me) inside and a rolled-up sheet of paper stating, “Babe, will you be my girlfriend?” I couldn’t believe how lucky I was to have him in my life and all the thought he put into this. To this day, I still have it saved! I love that we started out as best friends. My first boyfriend and I knew then that he would be my very last.

How They Asked

It was not easy for him to plan a proposal during the pandemic, but he did an amazing job! We currently live in Dallas but traveled back to California to visit family (we grew up in Los Angeles). Since it was sort of a last-minute decision to travel back to California, I had no idea that he would propose there. Since we could not travel anywhere for our anniversary this year, he told me to dress up and that we would go to one of our favorite beaches and do a photoshoot after.

Of course, I was so excited to dress up and take photos with him. It never crossed my mind that he would be proposing that day. I just thought it was beyond sweet of him to think of this photoshoot idea on his own, especially since he is not a fan of pictures. It’s the little things that he does that makes him so special to me.

On July 22nd, he first took me to one of our favorite beaches in Laguna Beach for a nice romantic walk. He then took me to Casa Romantica in San Clemente to begin our photo shoot. Once we walked to the back of the venue in the garden area, I saw the photographer and heard music in the background. I knew then that this was IT…this was finally OUR moment. I couldn’t believe it.

I was in such shock. After all these years, we finally made it to this momentous day. He walked me down a few steps to the area he had set up with lanterns and a guitar player (Morgan Mallory – amazing singer!) singing our favorite songs over the years. The location overlooked the ocean, such a breathtaking view. He had the most amazing speech prepared. Of course, he always knew it would be a YES.

We then slow danced to our favorite songs and he had both our families surprise me afterward to celebrate. The beach is a reoccurring theme in important life events for us: where he asked me to be his girlfriend, where we first said I love you to each other, our weekend trips at UCLA, and our favorite vacations. The story of our love has been long, but this is only the beginning. There are a lot of things that can make one happy in life, but all we really need is each other to be happy. I can’t wait to be Mrs. Keni.
