How We Met
It was July 1, 2010, I was 15 going into my sophomore year of high school, and I received a friend request on Facebook from Quint Walker. He privately messaged me and told me he was going to be the new kid in my class for the upcoming school year and was trying to make some friends. We casually messaged back and fourth and one of the first things we learned about each other was his birthday was exactly one week before mine. We finally met in the beginning of August at our County Fair right before the school year started. Being from a small town the fair was a big deal and teenagers spend all week there hanging out and catching up from the summer. We met up and walked around, we were extremely shy and it was actually pretty awkward. I could tell he had a crush on me, but I never thought of him in a romantic way because he just wasn’t “my type.” When our sophomore year started I really helped Quint around school and quickly introduced him to my friend group. Before you knew Quint and I were best friends.
He made me laugh like no other and we Skyped or talked on the phone every night. Quint was deeply falling for me, but I still only saw him as a friend. February of sophomore year I actually started to date another boy and Quint was crushed. This started the almost year long cycle of Quint and I going from best friends, hating each other, to almost dating. We were 15-16 we were so immature. I broke up with my boyfriend at the end of sophomore year and Quint thought it was finally his time. It was the end of May 2011 and Quint came to my house for the first time.
We were playing with a volleyball outside and I literally felt like I was struck with cupids arrow; I think I was falling for Quint too, but I didn’t dare tell him. It was now June 14, 2011 and Quint and I were hanging out. When I got to Quint’s house to drop him off he had a text from a friend daring Quint to kiss me. At first we joked about, but then it happened. It was like a movie kiss; I felt butterflies and saw the fireworks going off. We continued to kiss for the next two days and the end of hanging out, but then being a dumb 16 year old I not only went back to my ex once again, but twice. From our kissing in June 2011 to February 2012 Quint and I were constantly not on good terms. Sometime in February Quint heard that I really wanted a pillow pet and ended up buying me one.
I didn’t understand why and I did not want to accept it because Quint made a scene with my ex at the homecoming dance. Finally, on February 27, 2012 I let Quint come over to give me the giraffe pillow pet, I named it Oswald. We both apologized, confessed our feelings to each other, and decided to give it a try. The timing was finally right and we have been together since. Quint and I graduated high school in 2013 and headed off to college together at Northern Kentucky University. We got our own apartment the summer going into junior year where we are fur parents to our cat Winston and dog Bernie. We both joined greek life and fall of our junior year Quint became my sorority’s sweetheart (Theta Phi Guy) and as a Christmas gift junior year Quint lavaliered me, which is when a fraternity man lets his girlfriend wear his fraternity letters; like a greek pre engagement. We are both seniors graduating college May 7, 2017.
how they asked
Our 5 year anniversary was February 27, 2017 and it fell on a Monday so we celebrated on Saturday the 25th. Cincinnati, Ohio is right across the river from our college NKU so we spent all day there. We started off the day going to the Candle Lab creating a candle together to make an anniversary scent. We then went to brunch at Taste of Belgium for the best chicken n’ waffles and mimosas. After that we headed to Ault Park to walk around. It was pretty cold that day and I expressed we should maybe leave. He said we should go up the stairs and look around up there at first.
We were standing in a grassed area and he got very nervous and started talking a lot. He actually started to say things that would maybe be a post engagement talk so I knew it was happening and so nervous. He told the whole story how they asked my dad and how when he got his haircut the day before his barber hooked him up with the “engagement cut.” He finally got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.
When he opened the ring box I began to cry. Two girls in my sorority popped out fro behind a tree who were taking the pictures.
We ended the night by going to the Krohn Conservatory and then to Jag’s Steak and Seafood for a fancy romantic dinner where our waitress told the whole room we just got engaged. I am so excited to spend the rest of my life with my best friend.
