How We Met
New Years Eve, 2016. I was having a ‘girls night’, staying in for the evening. After a few glasses of wine, we decided to go out for a little bit and at least stay for the ball to drop. We tried to stay away from big crowds and went to a local restaurant that was having some NYE specials. We had a DD that night and about a half hour before we were going to be picked up a beautiful man asked if he could buy me a drink. I replied ‘it’s open bar’ but we can have one together. (Instead, he bought a fireball shot). He was super nice and we chatted for just a little while. I told him I had to go and it was nice meeting him. He asked for my number, which I was hesitant. My sister was with me and mouthed ‘give it to him’. So, I did. We ended up texting until nearly 5 in the morning. Mike called me at 11:00 in the morning and asked me on a date that night. (New Years day). I was a nervous wreck, but said yes. So, we did. He took me to dinner and a movie – and we even spent some time playing at Dave and Busters in between. It was awesome. We have been together ever since, not going one day without talking/seeing each other. It was literally a ‘love at first sight’ love-story.
how they asked
Christmas Eve Michael handed me a card. Inside the card was a handwritten letter. The last sentence said “now read the last work of every line in this letter”. I read aloud “Hey Shannon, pack your bags because we leave May 28th go to the tree to find out where”. One neatly wrapped present on the tree was an ornament that said ‘Ireland, Shannon and Michael 2018’ with a large castle in the background. I was initially in shock. He knew I always wanted to go to Ireland, but I never in a million years expected this as a Christmas gift… or even a gift at all. I cried my eyes out and everyone aside from me knew about the ‘big trip’ so we celebrated after, of course!! Fast forward to May 28th. A day we have been waiting for since Christmas! We had all sorts of countdowns and had planned our 10-day trip so we could do/see as much as possible while we were there. And, that we did.
Day one, overnight flight, exhausted but equally excited! We weren’t showered and hadn’t even been to our first destination; however, we went on a ‘castle tour’. We met a couple of Mike’s friends from high school who happened to be visiting at the same time. We first went to Bunratty castle and then off to Knappogue. When we got to Knappogue I thought it was closed. There were no cars, or even people, in sight. I said ‘I think we should probably go, they do not look open’. One of the girls in the back-seat said ‘oh I saw some cars on the other side’. Ok, I went with it. We parked, all got out and ventured to the gardens. They were beautiful.
We took lots of pictures and as we were wrapping up Mike asked for one more. (Of course, I will keep taking pictures with him)!! The end of this one was different though. He held my hand tight and told me he loved me more. Something we always say to each other. He continued with a speech that, unfortunately, I hardly remember because I started to get nervous something was going on. He got on one knee and asked me to marry him. I started crying and shaking. I was literally in shock/feeling the absolute best moment of my entire life. Of course, I said YES. Actually, I think I shook my head but felt like screaming to the top of my lungs, ‘YES, YES, YES’. We stood there and hugged…. it was not until after this that I actually saw the stunning, GORGEOUS, ring he just put on my finger. It was unbelievable really.
To top this off, Mike informs me that we are actually staying at the castle tonight, by ourselves. I didn’t understand, but he rented the entire Knappogue castle out for us that night. It was truly amazing and an unforgettable moment in my life. He continued to tell me all of these little pieces of a puzzle that night. Like, the ornament he gave me for Christmas, with the castle on it.. that was on purpose. As well as on Valentines Day… he ordered Knappogue Whisky and mentioned that we would probably be going there when we go to Ireland… little things that showed how much thought and consideration he put into this. It was perfect! What is even more perfect is knowing I can spend the rest of my life with my best friend, partner, confidant and, soul-mate. It is an indescribable feeling.
