Sébastien and Emilie's "Will You Marry Me" Necklace
How We Met
I picked accounting as a major because it seemed safe, logical, and promised good career prospects. I met Sébastien during my first summer internship at KPMG where he already worked. He happened to be passionate about accounting and we bonded over balance sheets and after work drinks. At the end of the summer I turned down a full time offer and quickly switched majors, but the experience wasn’t a total loss. I met the man of my dreams and for the first time I believed in the fact that everything happens for a reason.
how they asked
I always knew Sébastien loved me, but I had accepted long ago that he wasn’t the most romantic guy. We had talked about marriage and I assumed it would be a very matter-of-fact decision, one that we might rationally make over coffee and the Sunday paper. One cold Friday in January I came home from work early, sick with a bad cold. He was planning to propose that night and hadn’t expected me to show up early before he had time to set everything up in our apartment. He created a ruse by telling me he needed to go for a run, which upset me at the time because I was sick and wanted to be taken care of. He returned from his run with bags of groceries which seemed odd at the time but I didn’t question it. He proceeded to give me a beautiful golden necklace in the shape of the Snitch from Harry Potter (I am a HUGE fan) as a “just because” gift. The necklace had a hinge, and he asked if I understood the reference. In the last book, Harry has a Snitch with an inscription stating “I open at the close”. I nodded and opened the necklace; the inside said “Will you marry me?”
He explained that this moment represented the close of the first part of our life together and the beginning of forever. After taking the ring out of his pocket and slipping it on, he proceeded to pull surprises out of every nook and cranny of the apartment: ingredients to make the meal and cocktail I had on our first date, beautiful crystal champagne flutes I had mentioned in passing, roses, and a playlist of the top 25 songs from the year we met. That night made me realize that Sébastien doesn’t just love me, he understands me and I can’t wait for the rest of our life together.
