How We Met
Elijah and I met in January 2016. I was out with some of my sorority sisters at a bar called Tavern in Denton, Texas. I had just graduated from the University of North Texas and wanted to celebrate. Little did I know, my life was able to change. My friends and I were buying drinks when this guy walks up to me and introduces himself with an awkward handshake. I could tell he was nervous, but there was something about him that I knew was special.
He asked if he could buy me a drink (who says no to a free drink). We talked for a few minutes and found out he was attending school at the University of Texas Tech. I wanted to talk longer but unfortunately, my ride was there waiting for me. As we were saying our goodbyes, Elijah asked if he could have my phone number to “get to know me better.” The next day a text message popped up on my phone and we made plans for our first date!
how they asked
In November 2018, my boyfriend and I took a trip to Athens, Greece. For months and months, I was begging for him to take a day out of our trip to go to Santorini. It was something I always saw in pictures, movies and online. It was something that was on my bucket list. Elijah continued to tell me for months, it is too expensive, the ferry takes too long, etc.
He agreed that we would come back to Greece and take a trip solely to Santorini. I sadly agreed and was still excited for all the adventures we would do in Athens. On November 2nd, 2018, Elijah told me that we had a tour that started very early in the morning (4:30 to be exact.) We were up early, and in the taxi to our “tour”. As we pulled up to the airport, I was confused as to what was going on and what kind of tour this could be. He then explained how he had booked two flights to Santorini.
I couldn’t believe it, or him. He was surprising me with something I have always dreamt of seeing. We took a 30-minute flight from Athens to the beautiful island of Santorini. It was everything I pictured yet so much more. The white buildings, the clear water and the blue domes of the churches throughout the city were all too beautiful. Elijah explained that he set up a tour that included driving to see more of the city as well as dinner afterward. Elijah was sneaky and told me that we would receive one professional photograph, therefore I would need to dress nicely. We were going to meet our wonderful “tour guide” (Kristo) at 3 pm.
As we walked up to him and introduced ourselves, he immediately started naming facts about Santorini so I believed we were going on an actual tour. He began to take us to private sites down into Santorini. Kristo brought us to the most gorgeous view and said that he wanted to take our picture on this beautiful dome. We stepped up onto the dome and Kristo brought out his camera and stated a secret phrase (it is a beautiful day today) and as I turned to look at Elijah, he was down on one knee pulling out a ring.
Kristo was capturing the most memorable moment of my life and I was realizing he was not a “tour guide” at that moment. Kristo was booked for a one-hour photo session to capture our engagement pictures throughout Santorini. After our lovely photo session was over, we walked to watch the famous sunset of Oia, Santorini. It was the most magical day of my life, Elijah went above and beyond every expectation I ever had. Santorini, Greece will always hold a special place in our hearts. I cannot wait to spend forever with my best friend!
